Scoot new flights to Belitung & Pontianak

As Singaporeans, we’re well-acquainted with the obligatory trip to Bali for a metal reset when work gets a little too hectic. But if Bali’s beaches are all you know whenever you’re jetting off to Indonesia, you’re honestly missing out on the best the country has to offer. That’s why Scoot’s inviting travellers to change up their itineraries with new flights to Belitung and Pontianak.

From immersing yourself in beautiful natural landscapes to crossing the equator, literally, there’s much to see, do, and eat in both these cities. Here’s all you need to know before you book your flights.

What to know about Scoot’s new flights to Belitung & Pontianak

Scoot’s no stranger to launching new flights to lesser-known destinations within Indonesia; late last year, they announced that they’ll be flying to cities like Labuan Bajo, Medan, and Palembang. Now, they’re adding Belitung and Pontianak to that list.

Granite rock

Travellers will be able to book direct flights from Singapore to the tropical gem that is Belitung from 3rd May 2026 onwards. These will depart twice a week from Changi Airport; we’re looking at flight times of around 1 hour 40 minutes, and you’ll land in the quaint town of Tanjung Pandan. One-way, Economy Class flights to Belitung start from $99.

If you’re already daydreaming about your next getaway, Belitung is perfect for those who love the outdoors, as beautiful beaches, massive granite rock formations, and island-hopping opportunities are aplenty here. For the best views, swing by the Blue Kaolin Lake, and when you’re feeling adventurous, go spelunking at the Nek Santen Cave.

On the other hand, Scoot’s new flights to Pontianak will officially take off from 29th June 2026 onwards, but you can already start booking them via the Scoot website. The non-stop flights will leave for the capital of West Kalimantan 3 times a week, and flight durations float around 1 hour 35 minutes. Economy Class tickets to Pontianak from Singapore start from $219.

Dayak

Known as the “Equator City”, Pontianak lies directly on the equator; at the city’s Equator Monument, you can set foot on both the Northern and Southern hemispheres at the same time. Pontianak is also known for its vibrant culture; embark on a boat ride on the Kapuas River, learn more about the culture of the Dayak people, and feast on local dishes like Soto Pontianak and Kwetiau Siram.

Plan your next holiday to Belitung & Pontianak with Scoot

If you’re looking to spice up your trips to Indonesia, consider exploring cities like Belitung and Pontianak. Scoot has made these destinations that much more accessible and affordable, so there’s no reason to default to tourist hotspots like Bali or Jakarta the next time you’re headed for the Emerald of the Equator.

Pakuwon Batam

Batam’s largest mall with tax-free shopping, Pakuwon Batam, is already under construction and will eventually open for us to visit.

With the new hovercraft-like fast ferry to Batam shortening your commute to just 30 minutes, it might be even quicker to drop by Pakuwon Batam for your shopping than sitting through the Causeway jam for your usual JB shopping malls.

What is Pakuwon Batam?

Pakuwon Batam - exterior

Pakuwon Batam is set to be Batam’s newest and largest mall, taking up a whopping 12.4ha of land and having a total gross floor area of 286,000sqm. To give you a sense of its scale, this is bigger than any mall in Singapore and is around 3 times the size of ION Orchard.

Just Phase 1 of construction alone will include a 3,700sqm multipurpose plaza, 6 floors dedicated to delicacies and fresh seafood, 2 hotels with a combined 506 rooms, as well as 1 serviced apartment with 161 rooms .

What can you expect at Pakuwon Batam?

Local & international cuisine, plus gourmet seafood

Pakuwon Batam - dining

Food will be a major part of Pakuwon Batam, starting with the basement’s River of Flavours marketplace, where you’ll find a mix of local Indonesian eats and international dining options. Seafood lovers can also make a beeline for Seafood Paradise on Level 2, a dedicated dining zone focused on gourmet seafood.

Retail shops

The ground floor will be home to international retail brands, making it the main shopping zone for fashion, lifestyle, and other global labels. You’ll also find family, entertainment, and sports offerings on the upper floors.

Entertainment options

Beyond shopping and dining, Pakuwon Batam will also have spaces dedicated to entertainment and more active experiences. One of the main highlights is the Adrenaline Zone on Levels 1 and 1M, which will focus on high-energy activities for visitors looking for something more exciting than a standard mall run.

Event spaces & design features

The mall will also feature an airy, shaded plaza and flexible indoor-outdoor event spaces on the main ground floor for pop-ups, social events, and community gatherings.

To make the space feel a little less generic, there’ll be alfresco dining decks set amid lush greenery and water features, as well as standout design elements like a gourmet tower, a large LED screen, and a canopy.

Accommodation options

Pakuwon Batam - luxury hotels

With a mall that huge, you can’t expect to finish exploring within a day. So you’ll be glad to hear that the development will also integrate luxury hotels, all connected via Batam’s 1st skybridge – meaning you can make one of its rooms your home base to explore the mall and the rest of Batam.

Pakuwon Batam - pool deck

To show you what they really mean by “luxury”, the hotels will have courtyard garden rooms, private balconies, a banquet hall, as well as a pool deck from which you can even spot Singapore.

When will Pakuwon Batam open to the public?

Construction of Phase 1 began in late 2024, but no official opening date has been announced yet, although unofficial sources have indicated that the mall may open in late 2026 or in 2027.

Look forward to the opening of Pakuwon Batam

We’re keeping our eyes peeled for more updates on the mall, so that we can be the first to hop on a ferry when it finally opens its doors.

AirFish Voyager ferry service from Singapore to Batam

For those who can’t resist the allure of hopping on a ferry to Batam for a quick getaway from it all, boy do we have good news for you. Your trips to the Indonesian city are going to get a lot speedier with the newly announced AirFish Voyager.

This futuristic, hovercraft-like vessel is projected to be operational in the second half of the year, ferrying passengers to and from Singapore and Batam in under half an hour; here’s all you need to know about it.

What is the AirFish Voyager?

AirFish Voyager
The AirFish Voyager will be able to fly at a speed of up to 185km/h, thrice that of current ships.

The AirFish Voyager is a wing-in-ground marine craft developed by ST Engineering AirX. The craft can ferry up to 10 people in total including crew members, and it uses aerodynamic forces and air pressure to skim speedily across the water’s surface.

Ferry
A BatamFast ferry.

It was unveiled to the public during the first day of the Singapore Airshow on 3rd February 2026. During which, ST Engineering also announced that they’ll be joining hands with BatamFast to incorporate the AirFish Voyager into the regional ferry operator’s existing fleet of passenger ships.

It was reported that BatamFast could be welcoming passengers aboard the AirFish Voyage on their Singapore-Batam route as early as mid-2026, after being subject to necessary inspections and attaining appropriate certification.

How long will it take to travel from Singapore to Batam on the AirFish Voyager?

Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal

The journey from Singapore to Batam via the AirFish Voyager is expected to last just 25 minutes, much faster than the usual 45 to 60 minutes it takes on regular ferries. The AirFish Voyager is expected to depart from Singapore’s Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal, and will arrive at a dock in Batam, most likely either the Batam Centre or Nongsapura Ferry Terminal.

How much will tickets for a trip on the AirFish Voyager cost?

BatamFast ticket booth

As of writing, the ticket prices for a trip from Singapore to Batam aboard the AirFish Voyager have not been announced. However, it’s been speculated that prices will be more expensive as compared to typical ferry tickets; for reference, a return trip provided by BatamFast costs $76.

This is because the craft will be incurring higher operating costs due to only being able to carry 8 passengers at once, versus the 200 to 300 on a regular ferry. Passengers will also be paying a premium for the AirFish Voyager’s speed.

Will the AirFish Voyager be deployed on other routes departing from Singapore?

Tioman

Although there aren’t any finalised plans just yet, Mr Chua Choon Leng, general manager of BatamFast, has stated that they’re looking into deploying the AirFish Voyager on routes to other nearby destinations. These include Malaysia’s Tioman Island, and the islands of Bawah, Telunas, and Bintan in Indonesia.

Take a ride on the AirFish Voyager to Batam later this year

With January already done and dusted, we don’t have to wait awfully long for the AirFish Voyager to hit our docks. With day trips to JB already starting to get played out, perhaps it’s time to take to the seas for a swift sojourn at our Indonesian neighbours’.

Telunas Resorts – Private island & beach resort

We’ve all been there – planning a trip for your group of friends, but no one can agree on what to do. One just wants to nua, another wants to cram the itinerary with a bunch of activities. Headache, sia. But there is one place where you can get the best of both worlds: Telunas Resorts.

Believe it or not, this Maldives-like island in Indonesia, just a 2.5-hour boat ride away from Harbourfront Terminal, is the place to both chillax and unleash adventure mode. Here’s what you need to know:

Telunas Resorts offers 2 vastly distinct experiences at the Private Island and Beach Resort at different price points.

There is no free WiFi at Telunas Resorts. Although many can agree that home is where the WiFi connects, an authentic island escapade is where the WiFi doesn’t exist. We understand if you’re feeling apprehensive about this, but trust us, there’s enough to see and do on the beach resort for you to even remember that you’ve fallen off the grid.

Alternatively, consider getting an eSIM or SIM card just in case you need to contact loved ones back home.

Go on a secluded island getaway at Telunas Resorts

New ferry route to Batam from Singapore

Besides JB, Batam has long been our go-to for quick getaways. Now, getting there has become even more fuss-free, thanks to a new ferry route to Batam that has just launched, which drops you much closer to popular attractions around the island. And that’s a big deal, because most of us only have the weekend to spare for a short trip. Every minute saved on travelling is extra time to lounge by the pool or snap IG-worthy photos at a cafe.

Where does the new ferry route depart from in Singapore & where does it arrive in Batam?

Gold Coast International Ferry Terminal in Bengkong
Image credit: Digo Oketta via Google Maps

The new route is run by 2 well-known ferry operators, Sindo Ferry and Batamfast, and brings passengers from Harbourfront Centre in Singapore to the Gold Coast International Ferry Terminal in Bengkong, situated in northern Batam. It’s a great alternative if you’d rather skip the usual crowds at Batam Centre Point International Ferry Terminal.

Bonus: Bengkong is closer to beach clubs and other fun spots like Mega Wisata Ocarina Batam, an amusement park, and Batam Zoo Paradise. To give you a sense of the convenience, it’s just a 5-minute drive to Infinity Beach Club from Gold Coast International Ferry Terminal – compared to 17 minutes if you were coming from Batam Centre Point International Ferry Terminal.

How frequently does the new ferry route run & what are the timings?

Both operators run 2 round-trips a day, with morning, afternoon, and evening slots to fit around your travel plans.

Batamfast ferryImage credit: Batamfast

Batamfast departs HarbourFront Centre at 7.55am and 6.25pm. Return trips from Gold Coast International Ferry Terminal depart at 1pm and 7pm.

Meanwhile, Sindo Ferry departs HarbourFront Centre at 9.35am and 1pm, and returns from Gold Coast International Ferry Terminal at 10.30am and 3.30pm.

How long does the ferry ride take?

The new route utilises high-speed vessels that’ll get you to your destination in approximately 1 hour. Each ferry can also carry between 200 and 300 passengers, so snagging tickets shouldn’t be too difficult.

How much do the ferry tickets cost?

Sindo Ferry

A return trip costs $76/pax in Economy class – the same price you’d pay for a round-trip to Batam Centre.

Book ferry tickets on Batamfast or Sindo Ferry.

A new route to Batam that saves time without costing more

This new ferry route lets you skip the crowds, land closer to the fun, and still pay the same price as a trip to Batam Centre. But before you head off, remember to settle the essentials – download the All Indonesia app and fill in the mandatory travel declaration form so your trip goes smoothly from the moment you step off the ferry.

Nirup Island in Indonesia

Forget Batam or Bali for a moment – Nirup Island is a new island paradise in Indonesia that’s been popping up all over TikTok and Instagram. It’s only 45 minutes away from Singapore by ferry and has all the makings of a relaxing weekend getaway. So if a trip with wellness activities, water sports, and excursions sounds like your ideal holiday, we have all the details to help you plan your trip.

Where is Nirup Island?

Nirup Island from bird's eye view

The island is part of Indonesia’s Riau Islands Province, which is also home to Batam and Bintan. It used to be only accessible via private yachts, but access has recently opened up to the public with regular ferry services from Singapore and Batam.

How to get to Nirup Island from Singapore?

Horizon Fast Ferry

The easiest way is to take the Horizon Fast Ferry, which runs a 2-way direct service from HarbourFront Centre straight to Nirup Island and back. The ferry currently operates every Friday to Sunday, with departures from Singapore at 1pm SGT.

Starting 26th November 2025, Horizon Fast Ferry will also be adding Wednesday departures, just in time for you to start planning a mid-week escape.

A round-trip ticket costs S$76 in the Economy class, and travel time clocks in at approximately 45 minutes. You’ll also get a free 20kg luggage allowance, while excess weight is charged at S$1/kg, though chances are you won’t even need it. After all, this is an R&R trip, so pack light and you’re good to go.

Book ferry tickets from Singapore to Nirup Island.

How to clear immigration on Nirup Island?

All Indonesia app
Image adapted from: @kemenpar.ri & @ditjen_imigrasi via Instagram

You’ll need to submit the All Indonesia travel declaration, which was recently made mandatory for all travellers entering Indonesia. You can do this up to 3 days before departure, and it only takes a few minutes to fill in your details. Once you arrive, simply present your passport at the Nirup Island Ferry Terminal to clear customs.

From there, a complimentary buggy will bring you to The Westin Nirup Island Resort & Spa, one of the accommodation options on the island, in just 5 minutes.

Where to stay on Nirup Island?

Note: Prices are accurate at the time of writing, and are subject to change.

The Westin Nirup Island Resort & Spa is the island’s standout stay, and is part of Marriott Bonvoy’s lineup of well-known hotel brands all over the world. This resort is said to have 94 guest rooms and suites, plus 52 private villas altogether. But at the time of writing, only the Deluxe rooms are ready for booking since the resort just opened in June this year.

Don’t let that put you off – the Deluxe rooms are still a steal. Rates start from around IDR3.14M/night (~S$245.89), which is not bad at all for a place that gives you Bali-meets-Maldives vibes just a short ferry ride from Singapore. Each room also comes with a spacious balcony overlooking the ocean.

The Riahi Residences

Then there’s The Riahi Residences, an option for those craving extra space, privacy, and a touch of luxury. There are 2- to 4-bedroom villas, some with private pools and all with full kitchens and sea views.

They are designed with longer stays in mind and are a bit further from the main resort area, so you really get that sense of seclusion. Don’t worry though, guests still have full access to all of The Westin’s facilities.

Rates start from around IDR18.5M/night (~S$1,448.72) for a 2-bedroom villa with a private pool. We’ll be honest – it’s quite pricey, so maybe save it for a special occasion or just book a room at The Westin Nirup Island Resort & Spa for the same island vibes and ocean views.

What is there to do on Nirup Island?

Water sports like banana boat rides & kayaking experiences

Water sports

The island is dotted with water sports activities for all kinds of adventurers. Hop on a banana boat ride for a thrilling spin across the turquoise waters, with prices starting from IDR250,000 (~S$19.58) for a 15-minute ride and a minimum of 4 pax. Or grab a single kayak and paddle your way along the coast at your own pace for IDR320,000/1 hour (~S$25.06).

There’s even an all-day pass for IDR1M (~S$78.31) per person that lets you enjoy unlimited non-motorised activities. That means you can paddleboard and kayak to your heart’s content.

Spa treatments, workout sessions & pool time

If unwinding is more your speed, the Heavenly Spa by Westin offers a range of massages and treatments to melt your stress away. A 30-minute head and shoulder massage will set you back IDR680,000 (~S$53.25), while the indulgent 150-minute Island Living spa package goes for IDR3.98M (~S$311.67) per couple. The latter includes a foot soak, body brushing, a chocolate body wrap, and a traditional urut massage.

The resort also has a WestinWORKOUT Fitness Studio to help you squeeze in a workout, and outdoor pools to lounge, swim, or just float your worries away.

Indoor & outdoor activities for the young ones

Kids' club

This idyllic island isn’t just for adults – at The Westin Nirup Island Resort & Spa, there’ll also be a supervised kids’ club featuring age-appropriate activities, games, and mini adventures to keep little ones entertained while you relax.

Not much has been revealed yet, as the kids’ club is set to officially launch only in December 2025. But from what we know so far, it’s going to be a space where the young ones can play and learn, while parents get some well-deserved rest in the meantime.

Where to eat on Nirup Island?

Where to stay on Cempedak Island, Indonesia?

Villa

As far as accommodations go, this truly is a private island in Indonesia, with all 20 of the villas on Cempedak owned by the island management.

The island’s beach villas are mere metres away from the ocean’s ebbing waves.

There are seaview villas and beach villas priced at:

  • $475/night on weekdays
  • $630/night on weekends

Both options get you all of the perks for a stay on Cempedak. You’ll have a large deck complete with sun loungers, a private pool, and an iPod speaker system so that you can have your own personal beachside rave from the comfort of the villa.

What things are there to do on Cempedak Private Island?

Whether you prefer kayaking along crystal-clear waters or going on nature walks, there are plenty of activities to do on this private island in Indonesia near Singapore.

Sea activities like kayaking & snorkelling for free

You’re probably not always going to stay cooped up in your villa. Fortunately for you, like other beachside resorts, Cempedak Island has a whole host of seaborne activities.

Snorkelling

There’s an array of activities available on Cempedak Island, including the usual snorkelling, diving, kayaking, and sailing. Some might miss being able to jet ski; but to be honest, the stand-up paddleboards make for an equally fun alternative.

The real perk about this place is that most of the equipment is free to rent, barring some of the more advanced stuff like diving gear, catamaran sailing, advanced kayaks, and windsurfers.

Go for land activities like rock climbing & nature walks on Cempendak Island

Outdoor activitiesImage adapted from: Cempedak

Landlubbers need not worry, for there’s still plenty to do here if you wish to stay ashore. This includes nature walks, complete with guides to show you points of interest, as well as a variety of sports facilities like tennis, volleyball, and rock climbing. You can even take it slow at the library, or indulge in board games with other visitors, rum in hand.

Nature lovers would love to know that Cempedak Island also happens to be blessed with vibrant flora and fauna. The guides can point you in the right direction if you wish to experience the local wildlife, or perhaps even visit a sea turtle nest.

Where to dine at Cempendak Island

FoodImage adapted from: Cempedak

Dining promises to be an exciting experience at Cempedak Island, with daily menus prepared with local ingredients so that you’ll always have something new. They charge S$100++ daily for 3 meals, so all your dining needs are covered throughout your stay.

Indulge in meditation retreats & sailing events

A sneak peek into their zen-infused Island Wellness Retreat package.

Cempedak Island has an entire calendar of events for you to partake in. These include everything from meditation retreats, to meals by celebrity chefs, sailing races, and other workshops. They’ll even play host to the occasional Murder Mystery Weekend, during which vacationers get to channel their inner Sherlock to solve a spine-chilling whodunnit IRL.

Do note that most of these activities require that you email Cempedak ahead of your visit to reserve a spot, and some are chargeable.

Bonus: Sister island for families, complete with childcare facilities

Nikoi IslandImage credit: Nikoi

Whilst Cempedak Island is indeed an adults-only locale, it doesn’t mean that families actually need to scratch this off their list of travel destinations entirely. In fact, the resort actually comes with a family-friendly sister island, Nikoi Island.

Similar to Cempedak, it houses its own facilities, including a restaurant as well as its own set of land and sea-based activities, promising fun for the whole family. It comes with kid-friendly arrangements, and the island is watched over by staff who also provide daily activities for the little ones to participate in.

Coco Bay Bali

Bali is basically every Singaporean’s go-to when we want to live it up like celebrities for the weekend without breaking the bank. But with so many Bali villas to choose from, they may all start to look the same, until we stumbled upon Coco Bay Bali. This place takes villa living to a whole new level with interiors that look like they belong in Architectural Digest, not to mention 4 swimming pools and even a cinema room.

Here’s everything you need to know about Coco Bay Bali.

Where is Coco Bay Bali located?

coco bay bali - CangguImage credit: Tripadvisor

You’ll find Coco Bay Bali in Canggu, Bali, located just a 15-minute bike ride away from Echo Beach, which is a well-known surfing spot. Despite the villa’s secluded location, you’ll still be near trendy cafes and bars like Baked for speciality coffee and pastries and The Shady Pig, a speakeasy bar just 7 minutes away from the villa.

What to expect at Coco Bay Bali

8 rooms & 4 swimming pools

Even with its impressive number of bedrooms, Coco Bay Bali doesn’t compromise on style or comfort – think plush bedding and elegant decor so that every guest gets the same princess treatment when they visit.

coco bay bali - bedroomImage credit: Coco Bay Villa

There are a total of 8 bedrooms – that’s 5 main bedrooms plus 3 lofts, each with its own ensuite bathroom for maximum privacy. 7 of the 8 bedrooms come with king-sized beds, while the remaining room fits a queen-sized bed – still spacious enough for at least 2 people to crash.

coco bay bali - loftOne of the loft rooms in the house with its own private pool.

All rooms open up to stunning views of the common pool and lush gardens, so you’ll be waking up to a slice of paradise. If you’re after a bit more privacy, chope the lofts first when you arrive for a private swimming pool right outside your bedroom. Imagine rolling straight out of bed and diving into your own pool for a refreshing start to your day.

coco bay bali - poolImage credit: Coco Bay Bali

Even if you don’t manage to get first dibs on the coveted lofts, there’s always the large main pool. Rest assured that this isn’t your run-of-the-mill pool setup – the lagoon-shaped pool comes with its own cabana, outfitted with cushioned seating and plush pillows, and poolside loungers.

You’ll even get to enjoy a view of the open kitchen and living space while soaking in the pool for that indoor-outdoor living that celebrities seem to love.

Butler service & free breakfast

You’ll feel like a VIP from the moment you arrive, thanks to Coco Bay Bali’s team of butlers who are just a call away and ready to help with anything you need.

coco bay bali - breakfastImage credit: @cocobaybali via Instagram

Wake up to a free daily breakfast during your stay here – options include the Healthy Breakfast, which features avocado on sourdough toast or a smoothie bowl of assorted fruit; the American Breakfast, which includes Eggs Benedict with salmon or fluffy pancakes; and the Asian Breakfast, which features local favourites like nasi goreng or mie goreng.

There’s even a private chef on-site, ready to whip up something tasty whenever hunger strikes – check out their all-day menu for the full list of options.

Free buggy service

Once you’ve filled your tummy and decide it’s time to head outdoors, there’s a buggy service available so you won’t even have to worry about breaking a sweat to reach paradise.

Note that the buggy service is limited to drop-off points in the Berawa area, which include places like FINN Beach Club, Cove for local fashion hauls, and other local bars and cafes around the area.

Resident turtle

coco bay bali - turtleImage credit: @cocobaybali via Instagram

And if all that still isn’t enough to impress you, Coco Bay Bali has another surprise – a resident snapping turtle who calls the villa home. This little guy would be happy to keep you company if you’re looking for some me-time away from the group or just a cute companion to admire the tropics.

Sunken living space, cinema room & other amenities

coco bay bali - living roomImage credit: Coco Bay Bali

The living room is located next to the kitchen, making it a breeze to grab snacks without missing out on any HTH convos. It’s also surrounded by lush plants and features overhead lamp lights that channel serious resort lobby vibes.

The star of the show here is its sunken seating area, a chic design that adds an extra bit of glam and a cosy spot for everyone to chill at.

coco bay bali - cinema room

You’ll be reconsidering a night out after you find out that Coco Bay Villa has its own cinema room. It’s a cosy corner decked out with comfy couches, long enough to fit your entire crew, and a huge projector screen to get the best Shaw Lido-at-home experience.

With the room’s panelled walls and warm lighting, you’ll feel like you’re in an actual cinema, just without the stray popcorn and occasional crying child.

coco bay bali - gym

There’s also a fully equipped gym stocked with a treadmill and weights, complete with floor-to-ceiling mirrors for that post-workout selfie shot. Once you’re done with your workout session, head to the wash-up area that’s prepped with fluffy towels and a sink to freshen up.

Take a trip to paradise at Coco Bay Bali

coco bay bali - coco bay bali

If the villa’s sprawling grounds make you a little nervous about security, don’t worry – there’s a security team on-site and a villa manager to ensure your stay here is stress-free and secure.

While Coco Bay Bali’s rate of IDR53,757,440 (~S$4,236.05)* for a minimum 2-night stay might seem steep at first glance, it’s not bad if you think about what you’re getting for the price. After splitting the cost among 16 guests, it works out to be about S$264.75/pax* for the entire experience. It’s pretty worth it for resort-standard amenities with privacy and a short buggy ride away from the beach.

So the next time you find yourself planning a trip to Bali, consider a treat-yourself holiday at Coco Bay Bali.

Nikoi Island

When we think of beach holidays, our minds probably wander to the beach resorts in Bali or Thailand. But we’re here to tell you that you don’t need to get on a plane to indulge in some R&R time. Not too far from Singapore, 2.5 hours away to be exact, is Nikoi Island

With atas pool villas, beach bars, and a whole slew of water activities, heading to Nikoi Island for your next short getaway sounds tempting af

Fancy villas to lounge in

nikoi islandImage credit: @lauremarty

For starters, Nikoi is located 8km off the coast of Bintan. You won’t find the usual hotel rooms here, but 18 2-storey rustic villas with balconies that look out to the ocean. You’ve also got your own daybeds so you can lounge around on the open-air decks on the 1st floor of the villas. We’ll take that, thank you very much

nikoi island Image credit: @living_your_life_away

And if you can’t tell already, privacy is key here. You’re on a private island, with your emails set to out-of-office, and only 17 other villas around, what more could you possibly ask for?

nikoi island

Well, your inner hermit may be jumping for joy – you can take your me-time up a notch by booking one of the 3 new pool villas. Great for families, each beachfront villa has 2 bedrooms – which comprises a master bedroom upstairs and a twin room downstairs.

We’d chope the twin room if we were you, so you can plunge straight into the private pool in the morning. We truly woke up like this.

Wine & dine with views of the ocean

“But private island, eat where??” you may be thinking. Well, we’re glad you asked. There are 2 dining spaces on Nikoi Island – one for families and another for couples. So you and bae can have a romantic candlelight dinner without kids running around right beside you.

nikoi island

The private island has also introduced a new restaurant, Biru, which means “blue” in Bahasa Indonesia. It points to the fact that you get to enjoy panoramic views of the ocean while having lunch. It’s a Mediterranean sharing-style concept here – think platters of lamb skewers, chargrilled broccoli with tahini, and zucchini fritters with spiced yoghurt.

After dinner, head for a tipple at one of the 3 bars, watch a movie under the stars at the open-air cinema, or sit by a bonfire on the beach.

Activities on Nikoi Island

The best part about being on a private island is that nature is right at your doorstep – and the surrounding province is known to have some of the most beautiful reefs in the region. The island provides snorkelling or scuba diving equipment, so you can see a whole new world beneath the turquoise waters. Otherwise, get your paddles and go on a sunset kayak around the islands.

There are also 2 natural grass tennis courts for those who want to play tennis or croquet, and a Kids Club for the young‘uns.

Getting to Nikoi Island

@berhiannon

There’s a misconception that private islands are only reserved for billionaires the likes of Elon Musk. But rates at Nikoi Island start from S$425/night for a 1-bedroom beach house. To put it into perspective, some 5-star hotels in Singapore start from $450/night for just a room.

It’s not hard to get to Nikoi, either. It’s a 1-hour ferry ride from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal to Bintan. You’ll then be whisked on a 1-hour car journey across Bintan, followed by a 20-minute speed boat ride to Nikoi Island.

Expect to pay ~S$100++/adult and ~S$53++/child for a round trip, which includes the car journey and speed boat. You even get to use the VIP lounge at Bintan Ferry Terminal. Business class, who?

But if you’re heading to other destinations before checking into Nikoi Island, you can book your ferry to Bintan from S$112/pax for a round trip via an external vendor.
