Haidilao freebies to get

When we Singaporeans think of having hotpot, the household name Haidilao probably pops up immediately in our minds. And regardless of whichever outlet you check out, there’s always a long queue. That’s no surprise though, as not only is their food mouth-watering, they’re also extremely generous with their freebies.

If you’re new to the Haidilao scene or a loyal customer who has yet to uncover the full list of perks to be had, check out these freebies that all Haidilao Singapore outlets offer, and make sure you tick them off your list during your next meal there.

What’s the best time to visit Haidilao?

Haidilao tends to get pretty crowded on weekends, and especially during peak lunch and dinner hours. To avoid painfully long queues, we suggest heading down right before peak period, at either 11am or 4-5pm.

You can also consider visiting less crowded outlets in the heartlands, like at The Seletar Mall and Sun Plaza. If you’re heading to outlets in town like at Plaza Singapura or MBS, defo expect to wait a lil’ longer.

You can also shorten your wait time by making an online reservation or calling in earlier to take a queue number for your preferred timeslot. Do note that you’ll probably still have to wait a while upon arrival, though!

How much does a meal at Haidilao cost?

While the amount you spend at Haidilao really depends entirely on what and how much you order, the average diner tends to fork out roughly $45 to $55 per pax for a filling meal. As a rough gauge, base prices start at $13 for a portion of a single-flavour soup base, while dishes typically range between $6 and $20.

1. Free-flow snacks like BBQ crackers & ice cream while queuing

HDL snacks

The queues at Haidilao can get crazy long, and to stop your stomach from growling, they offer up all types of sweet and savoury treats while you wait for your seats. These options range from packets of BBQ and wheat chips to watermelon slices and even ice cream.

And to make the wait a little less torturous, there are even card games and Connect Four sets to entertain you while you queue.

2. Gel manicure & gloves

Yes, ladies, this is probably one of the reasons why Haidilao’s queues are extraordinarily long. They sure know how to pamper their female customers who’re waiting for their seats by providing them with free gel manicures. Children who are yearning to get their nails done too are more than welcome.

Customers can choose between having simple single-coloured nails or themed nail art designs during festive occasions. To protect your freshly done nails, the restaurant also provides you with plastic gloves.

3. Prawn peeling service

We all know one person who only eats prawns if they’re peeled, and whether you’re that pampered person or the one who ends up doing the peeling, you’d be glad to know that the restaurant offers up free prawn peeling services.

Simply wave to any friendly staff and state your request and voila, you got it. Say goodbye to dirty hands and just sit back and enjoy your meal.

4. Charging ports & wifi

You’ll need some juice and Wifi to IG story your spread of meats at HDL

Yas, charging ports and WiFi. The charging ports are built into every table so just whip out your USB and refuel your phone’s battery juice if you’re running low for that perfect flat lay shot.

The username and password for the free WiFi are as follows:

You’re welcome.

5. Birthday fruit platter & longevity buns during birthday month

bday freebies

One year older, one year healthier. To celebrate your birthday, Haidilao will give you a free fruit platter, complete with a slice of cake, during your birthday month. And we’re not looking at just a small plate with only 1 type of fruit. We’re looking at a huge spread including mangoes, kiwi, tomatoes, and seedless grapes.

The elderly get something a little different: longevity buns, which represent health and long life in Chinese culture. In addition, the restaurant also loans all birthday peeps a giant LED-light display signboard with the words “Happy Birthday”.

6. Children’s toys & playroom

Haidilao is a family-friendly dining experience, thanks to the restaurant’s playrooms for children. These spaces can be found at selected outlets and contain toys, games, and slides to keep the little ones entertained.

Parents can also request for the baby cot to be brought directly to the table so they can keep a closer eye on their toddlers.

Ladies (and gentlemen) with long hair will understand how it always gets in the way when eating. Once again, Haidilao comes to the rescue with their complimentary hair ties so you don’t have to borrow from your friends. Aside from helping you keep your hair in place, the restaurant will also provide you with aprons to protect your clothes from stains.

8. Ziplock bag to protect your phone from soup splashes

Placing your phone anywhere near boiling water is pretty precarious, but many of us take the risk anyway. But to give our phones extra protection, the restaurant provides free ziplock bags in case of any soup or drink spillage.

9. Free Haidilao membership to chalk up points to redeem branded gifts

Loyal fans of Haidilao, here’s an extra excuse for you to continue dining there. If you sign up for Haidilao’s membership program, you’ll receive points for every dollar spent ($1=1 point), which can be used to redeem menu items and attractive branded prizes like Dyson hairdryers.

The gifts change every few months, so you’ll always be surprised by what’s offered next.

We know how particular restaurants can be sometimes, with all their rules about not allowing drinks purchased from other stores to be brought in. Well, that’s something you won’t have to worry about at Haidilao Singapore since they don’t charge you corkage. Yep, feel free to bring your bubble tea into the restaurant without having to worry about it getting confiscated.

11. Download the HDL app for free dishes every Tuesday

Besides accumulating points for gift redemptions, members who download Haidilao’s app will also receive complimentary vouchers for freebies every Tuesday. These include anything from free drinks and meat dishes, to sides like meatballs and veggies.

P.S. New users will also receive up to $10 voucher coupons upon downloading the app.

12. Create your own soup base

@ms.quek

Did you know that you can make DIY Spicy Soup at Haidilao using the sauce condiments? Its so easy just follow this recipe. ‼×3 times total‼ Sesame Sauce 2scoop Sesame oil 1 scoop Sacha sauce 1 scoop Sacha sauce 1 scoop Minced garlic 1 scoop Oyster sayce 1 scoop Soy sauce 1 scoop Fried Sesame Salt #haidilao #haidilaohotpot #singapore #haidilaohack #fyp

♬ Coffee Break, On the Terrace – Cozy-Cozy-Moodscape

Here’s a hack that’ll save you from paying for a soup base: order a plain water base for free, then head to the sauce bar to build your own broth from scratch. Popular DIY recipes include a mala base with chilli oil, a sukiyaki-style broth with soy sauce, or a creamy soya milk soup with a $3 soya milk drink. You can also adjust the spice level to your liking by adding chilli oil for the right kick.

Do note that the sauce bar costs $4/pax, but if you’re already using it for your dipping sauces, the DIY soup base is essentially free. With a quarter-pot soup base starting from $11, the savings add up.

13. Donate blood for a 20% discount

Haidilao has teamed up with the Singapore Red Cross to reward blood donors with 20% off food items at all 15 outlets islandwide. If you donated on the same day, simply show your bandaged arm to the staff, while those dining on a different day can flash their donation proof on the DonateBlood app to redeem the discount any weekday in March.

Tingkat delivery in Singapore

Not all of us have the time to cook at home, so we turn to our go-to fast food joints, restaurants, or delivery apps. But eating out isn’t always healthy and can get expensive. Since we’re already spending that money, we might as well consider healthier meal options.

Enter tingkat delivery services in Singapore, which conveniently bring balanced, home-cooked meals to our doorstep with menus that change every day. Some of these companies are even dietitian-approved and Halal-certified.

What is tingkat delivery?

Tingkat delivery is a colloquial term for a system of daily delivered meals. The concept was based on how people would pack tiffin meals for their loved ones in the past. It gets its name from the fact that these meals were often packed in metal, stacked boxes, or tingkats.

It steers away from traditional food delivery, as the meals are usually family-style, with multiple dishes for sharing to eat with rice. These days, dishes can be quite inventive, with international cuisines like Western, Korean, and Thai dishes available.

Tingkat meals are also delivered across a span of days, rather than a one-off order. This allows for meal planning and time saved on cooking and cleaning.

Empress Porridge review: “To be fair, the food is nice and doesn’t leave a metallic after-taste characteristic of MSG. The portion is a tad small for the price paid. The only flip side is that they come in plastic containers. Not so environmentally friendly.”

Aesthetic Starbucks outlets in Singapore

There’s just something about relaxing and sipping on a drink in a cafe, reading a book or catching up with friends; and the ambience, for many of us, is what completes the experience.

Out of all the nearly 150 outlets in Singapore, it’s safe to say that all of them pass the vibe check with their classically green and dark-wood interiors. But, not all outlets are equal and if you’re looking for the best of the lot, here are their most aesthetic outlets that are worth travelling for:

What food & beverages can I get at Starbucks Singapore?

The menu at Starbucks differs slightly for every country. However, you’ll find staples that are available at every outlet. This includes espressos like the Americano and Cappuccino, tea lattes such as the English Breakfast Tea Latte and Earl Grey Tea Latte, and frappuccino blended options including the Caramel Frappuccino and Dark Mocha Frappuccino.

Some of you might’ve heard of the elusive Starbucks secret menu. This refers to custom drink orders you can request for baristas to make. Curious cats can try drinks like the chocolate and banana-filled Chunky Monkey Frappuccino, or the raspberry-flavoured Cotton Candy Frappuccino.

They also have an extensive food menu. There are sandwiches like the Chicken Ham and Cheese Panwich; Meatless Beef, Avocado Omelette, Mushroom & Cheese Wrap; and the Spinach & Mushroom Quiche. Sweet treats include their Signature Chocolate Cake, Banana Walnut Muffin, and Raisin Danish.

Starbucks offers seasonal F&B that are available for a limited period of time. For example, their spring offerings include the Osmanthus Honey Cake, Earl Grey Lemon Cheesecake, French Vanilla Mille-Feuille Oatmilk Latte, and Peach Passion Blossom Cream Frappuccino. You can stay updated on their latest items via the Starbucks website or social media platforms.

What’s the difference between Starbucks and Starbucks Reserve?

Simply put, a Starbucks Reserve store is the atas version of a regular Starbucks store. You can find a selection of exclusive and exotic coffees that aren’t sold at your regular Starbucks. Some examples include the Iced Shakerato Bianco and the Piccolo Latte. They also offer various brewing methods, including coffee press, Chemex, siphon, and Modbar pour-over.

They also offer ice cream beverages like the House Affogato, Cold Brew Float, Cold Brew Malt, and Nitro Cold Brew Float. Do note that these items are only available at Jewel Changi Airport and Paya Lebar Quarter.

Singapore currently has 4 Starbucks Reserve outlets. These are located at Jewel Changi Airport, Marina Bay Sands, Paya Lebar Quarter, and Capital Tower.

1. Gardens by the Bay

Nature oasis with pet-friendly alfresco seating

Gardens by the Bay

If you need a break from the concrete jungle, then the Gardens by the Bay Starbucks will be your great escape. Opened in April 2024, this nature-inspired outlet has vibrant blooms and soft moss peppered throughout. A soothing sight for those who are used to staring at computer screens.

You’ll also find an outdoor seating area where you can bring your furry friends to chill at. There’s ample seating both inside and outside, so you won’t have to squish with other customers. BTW, the Starbucks is located at the Active Garden which does not require any admission tickets.

2. Tekka Place

Decorated with barista’s artwork

Little India has many charms, and 1 more to add to the list is Tekka Place’s Starbucks, which opened during Deepavali in 2020. It’s since flown under the radar, but for those now in the know, it’s a quiet outlet without the usual crowds.

unique outlets starbucks singapore tekka place art

Although not the largest out there, this outlet has intriguing artworks hung along the walls – and the artist behind 3 of them is none other than their own barista, Sastitharan Subramaniam. And aside from having a wealth of hidden artistic talent as seen from his art pieces on display, Sasti also holds the title of Starbucks Regional Barista Champion of the region.

unique outlets starbucks singapore tekka place motifs

Look out for motifs featuring the Starbucks siren and the Sumatran tiger, a native animal to the area, where some of Starbucks’ coffee beans are harvested from.

For the ‘Gram, there’s also a pretty pink wall to snap that mandatory Starbucks shot.

Starbucks

3. VivoCity

Pastel pink wave designs

unique outlets starbucks singapore vivo city

Most of us head down to VivoCity for a shopping spree or as a pit-stop before entering Sentosa Island. If you’re a coffee-lover, another reason to pop by ASAP is their Starbucks outlet which, at this moment, is arguably the prettiest of the lot.

unique outlets starbucks singapore vivo interiorFun fact: Contrary to popular belief, the Starbucks logo is not a mermaid but rather, a siren – which has 2 tails! Spot them in these art pieces.

You may have realised by now that many of their outlets are decorated differently, but for those who love pastel hues, this one’s a winner with customised ocean-themed murals, a nod towards its proximity to the harbour.

unique outlets starbucks singapore snacks drinksClockwise: Raspberry Meringue Tart, Caramel Frappuccino and Apple Tart.

To satiate that sweet tooth, dig into the freshly-baked pastries such as their Raspberry Meringue Tart ($6.20) and Apple Tart ($6.20). If these look unfamiliar, that’s because these pastries are exclusive to the Vivo and Jewel outlets for the time being.

Starbucks

4. River Wonders

Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking nature

There’s plenty to do in Mandai Wildlife Reserve for a local touristy day-out – from exploring the Singapore Zoo to the Night Safari.

But first, coffee.

unique outlets starbucks singapore River Safari

Save that morning cuppa for the Starbucks outlet right outside the entrance of River Wonders, a park under the Mandai Wildlife Reserve, that’s shrouded in nature. Bringing to mind a rainforest resort, this outlet has gigantic windows lining 1 side of the cafe so you can get your caffeine fix with a view.

unique outlets starbucks singapore River Safari wall artThe high ceiling and huge wall art brought us into a tranquil headspace.

You don’t need a ticket to River Wonders to enter – so even if you’re in the area visiting the Singapore Zoo or Night Safari, popping by is still an option.

Starbucks

5. Rochester Park

Pre-war colonial bungalow

unique outlets starbucks singapore Rochester Park
This outlet lies within a lush pocket of greenery

Just a 6-minute walk from Buona Vista MRT is Starbucks at Rochester Park. At a glance, it’s easy to see why this has been nicknamed one of the most beautiful Starbucks outlets in Singapore. Other than being one of the few standalone outlets, its interior design also retains an old-world charm.

unique outlets starbucks singapore Rochester Park sitting area

Retaining elements from its time as a pre-war colonial bungalow, you’ll find the 2nd floor of this outlet oozing homey old-world vibes with its many low coffee tables; wide, plush seats; and black and white photographs adorning the walls – perfect for history buffs who are curious about the building’s past.

Sip your favourite frappuccino in their air-conditioned space to escape the sweltering heat, or if the weather allows, enjoy your drink outdoors on the balcony.

6. Katong Square

Pastel Peranakan-inspired designs

Katong 86 is many things – it’s an ex-police station, conservation house and now, also home to the charming Katong Square Starbucks. Walk in and you’ll see arched doorways and Peranakan-inspired paintings adorning the walls, as homage to the Peranakan heritage of the area.

unique outlets starbucks singapore Katong Square interiorFun fact: The paintings here are done by local artist Danielle Tay.

While vivid Peranakan art might sound like a jarring addition to the usual chill vibes of most other outlets, the juxtaposition works like a dream here thanks to a tasteful pastel palette and light wood furnishings.

There’s a variety of seats to pick, from bar stools near the cashier to sofas and dining chairs lining the perimeter of the outlet’s interior and larger communal tables to accommodate larger groups. If you’re in luck, go for the roomy seats near their large windows to watch the world go by.

Starbucks

7. Liat Towers

First Starbucks store in Singapore, revamped

unique outlets starbucks singapore Liat TowersImage credit: Starbucks Singapore

Ask your parents and they might know more about the Liat Towers’ Starbucks than us millennials do. Located along the bustling Orchard Road, this was the first-ever Starbucks in Singapore since 1996, and has been in existence longer than some of us! Not to worry though, as it certainly doesn’t look the least bit its age, since the store was renovated in 2019.

A handwritten name or note is always the cherry on top of every SBUX order, and here, you’ll find that personal touch immortalised in the form of a feature wall. You can’t miss the 100 barista-decorated cups located in the store, topped with a sign that says “1st Starbucks in Singapore” – in case anyone wants a photo memo.

8. Paya Lebar Quarter

Paya Lebar airbase-inspired

A closer look at Paya Lebar Quarter’s Starbucks might show hints of industrial elements in the form of grey tiles behind the counter and shutter panels in the partition walls. The inspiration behind the outlet’s sleek yet utilitarian design was inspired by Paya Lebar airbase.

Home to one of the few Starbucks Reserve outlets in Singapore, this branch also houses award-winning baristas. Be sure to order from the Reserve-exclusive menu, which contains many lesser-known treats such as Hazelnut Bianco Latte and The Lookout – a concoction of rich coffee, sweet demerara syrup, and a refreshing splash of sparkling water.

Starbucks Reserve

9. United Square

Bright glasshouse concept

unique outlets starbucks singapore United SquareImage credit: Starbucks Singapore

We don’t always need our cafes to look 10/10, but when they do, the experience is made all the better. The main draw of United Square’s Starbucks is pretty obvious – it looks like a modish glasshouse, with floor-to-ceiling windows all around to allow plenty of natural light in.

unique outlets starbucks singapore United Square interiorImage credit: Starbucks Singapore

The 360-degree glass windows could have you thinking you’re in MBS, whilst the interior screams MUJI with a touch of Starbucks Reserve sophistication. Wherever you set up camp to sip on your handcrafted brew, you’ll be promised an abundance of natural light in the day and a wondrous illuminated sight when night falls.

Starbucks

10. Jewel Changi Airport

Edgy interior & exclusive menu

unique outlets starbucks singapore Jewel Changi Airport

Jewel Changi Airport is home to many gems and one of the highlights that many of us gawked at when the mall first opened was Starbucks’ magnificent flagship store. Many of us have walked right by it, but few actually know of the outlet’s unique offerings beyond its eye-catching exterior.

unique outlets starbucks singapore Jewel Changi Airport 4 tap nitro

Don’t automatically order your go-to frappe on your next visit – try something from their exclusive 4-tap nitro coffee and tea menu instead. The tap churns out nitro-infused beverages that taste smooth and clean without the typical bitterness that comes along with coffees and teas.

We recommend the Nitro Cold Brew for anyone who needs 3 times the caffeine hit, or the Nitro Green Tea Latte for avid matcha fans.

unique outlets starbucks singapore Jewel Changi Airport mural

Enjoy your cuppa all in the stylish interior decked with a huge hand-chiselled mural of the Starbucks siren and feature walls with actual plants. What is not so noticeable, on the other hand, is the Art Room that’s filled with commissioned work and heritage pieces, hidden behind a nondescript frosted glass wall.

The first outlet to be housed in one of our iconic shophouses is none other than Starbucks Chinatown Smith Street. Situated just a 3-minute walk from Chinatown MRT station, the outlet can easily be spotted via its colourful mural depicting a bullock cart carrying coffee cherries – a nod to Chinatown’s heritage.

This one’s a 2-storey store with outlet-exclusive merch and drinks like Black Sesame Oatmilk Coffee Frappuccino with soy pudding ($9.90). A collab with Old Seng Choon means that local treats like XL Chicken Char Siwe Puff ($6) and Coffee Bolo Bun ($4.90) also make an apperance on the menu.

Check out the dedicated retail space for a chance to snap pics with a life-sized Merlion Bearista and Starbucks merch that includes designs by local calligraphy artist, Junlefont.

When it comes to the interiors, you may notice that the seating area is inspired by our HDB void deck chess set-ups and plenty more murals adorning the walls. If you want a place to relax, have a drink, and admire some art, this is the outlet to be at.

Starbucks

12. Bird Paradise

Glasshouse vibes with rural Japan feels

Nature lovers and eco-warriors will adore the Starbucks at Bird Paradise. This coffee house not only serves brews and snacks, but also has eco-friendly practices in place, including the use of reclaimed wood throughout the entire outlet. So you don’t have to feel guilty about grabbing your 2nd cup of coffee for the day.

The rustic wooden structure blends harmoniously with its natural surroundings. See if you can spot whimsical drawings on the floor-to-ceiling glass doors featuring plants and various feathered friends.

13. Jurong Lake Gardens

Pet-friendly with waterfront views

Westies can flex that they have one of the chio-est Starbucks in Singapore since the opening of Jurong Lake Gardens’ Starbucks. Situated along Jurong Park connector, the coffee house has bicycle parking just outside, making it a convenient pit-spot for those who are on a cycling adventure.

Starbucks

(Closed) Tampines Mall

Fellow Easties will know of the Tampines Mall Starbucks, snugly seated between Century Square and Tampines Mall. What used to be a dark, tight space has since been revamped into a futuristic piece of art with giant reflective glass panels all around – making it a highly coveted choice for a coffee break.

You may be surprised to find that unlike the exterior, the interior is warmly-hued with wood furnishings and nature-inspired designs all around. Head up the stairway to access the new and spacious second level that offers up plenty of cosy armchairs and bar seats to facilitate your catch-up sesh or work meetings.

Am I allowed to work or study in Starbucks?

The short answer is yes, you can. The Singapore outlets do allow the public to occupy the tables and chairs for a couple of hours. There are charging outlets for those who are using their laptops and phones. That said, if the outlet is packed, do be considerate and avoid hogging the seats for too long.

Starbucks rewards members can get refills on hot and iced coffee and teas for $1.80. You can also request for free drinking water and “pup cups” – which is a small cup of whipped cream suitable for dogs and cats.

Almost every Starbucks store in Singapore has free WiFi you can  connect to. As part of their marketing strategy, Starbucks also abides by their 10-minute rule, whereby stores will remain open for 10 extra minutes before their scheduled opening and closing times.

Tiong Bahru cafes

No matter what region of Singapore you reside in, there’s a reason why Tiong Bahru is always mentioned when cafe-hopping is on the agenda. It may be situated towards the far south of our island, but the fact that Tiong Bahru MRT is almost smack in the middle of the East-West Line makes it pretty accessible; and well worth the trip to check out the many Tiong Bahru cafes.

Whether you’re picking that one perfect cafe to suit your vibe, cuisine, and theme preference or looking to make a cafe-hopping itinerary out of it, here are the must-visits:

1. Tiong Bahru Bakery

One of the OGs in Singapore’s cafe-hopping scene, Tiong Bahru Bakery has now grown to a chain of several outlets throughout the nation, including a safari-themed cafe in Dempsey.

Swing by the Tiong Bahru outlet for a no-frills brunch sesh, and to sample their famous pastries. There’s a nice al fresco section where you can soak in the tranquil atmosphere and do some people-watching.

Depending on whether you’re craving something classic or with a slight twist, the top recommendations are the signature Croissant, Kouign Amann, and Green Tea Almond Croissant.

2. Caffe Pralet

Whether you call them sandos or sammies, jam-packed sandwiches are an emerging cafe trend. It’s not hard to see why, as they’re a feast for both the eyes and belly. Caffe Pralet has been perfecting the craft since 2006, and you can be sure of their dedication to food as they’re opened by the team behind a culinary institute – Creative Culinaire.

Their gourmet creations include the Beefin’ Cheesin and Spam Bam, featuring braised chuck tender and crisped Spam respectively. They’ve also got vegetarian and vegan options, like Magic Mushrooms and Tofu Sesame King. Not forgetting a TikTok favourite, the Burnt Butter Honey Glaze, featuring a great balance of salty and sweet.

3. The Butcher’s Wife

The Butcher’s Wife is run by the gang behind Tiong Bahru Bakery, so you know it’s gonna be good.

Having debuted as a gluten-free establishment in 2018, the restaurant has earned praises for its robust menu. Some staples include the chargrilled octopus, Brazilian seafood stew, and grilled wagyu picanha. In addition to surf and turf, The Butcher’s Wife also serves a selection of creamy goat cheese and ricotta which go pretty well with the vegan bread basket.

4. Creamier

If you can’t commit to a full meal but still have room for dessert, check out Creamier.

tiong bahru cafesImage credit: @creamier.sg via Instagram

After a decade of testing and experimenting, the local ice cream shop nailed its handcrafted formula using nothing but the highest quality ingredients. Small batches of creamy and rich ice cream are hand-churned in the kitchen at every outlet daily.

Original flavours like chocolate and cookies and cream are beloved standbys, but creative concoctions like blue pea vanilla and thai milk tea are also legit.

Creamier Handcrafted Ice Cream and Coffee (Tiong Bahru)

5. Micro Bakery

The Tiong Bahru cafe scene is filled with standouts, and Micro Bakery is one of those.

tiong bahru cafesImage credit: Eatbook

Taking over the space that was once occupied by Forty Hands, this new joint’s big on bread. But not just plain loaves; we’re talking juicy grilled cheese, caramelised mushroom toastie, and moist honey nut butter toast. Get a side of the homemade tomato tartine with ricotta cheese and you’ll be forever changed.

There’s also the duck ragout crepe and house-cured trout with crisps that you’d be remiss not to munch on.

6. Merci Marcel

One of the trendiest French eateries on home soil, we’d be remiss not to mention Merci Marcel’s sheer aesthetics. The breezy patio section where sunlight floods in is a popular choice in particular, giving that “France in Singapore” experience – and it’s no wonder that snap-happy Instagrammers flock to this cafe like bees to honey.

The dishes don’t fall short either, with decadent treats like Eggs Benedict with crispy Bayonne ham and Croque Marcel – their twist on a classic Croque Monsieur – being foolproof introductions to the cuisine.

Swing by past sundown for a totally different, equally très chic vibe. They open till midnight 6 days a week, so you can have late-night chats accompanied by tipple.

7. Flock Cafe

Flock Cafe is a humble family-run business. The owners are big on coffee and cafe culture, so you can expect only quality brews here.

Due to the relatively tighter space, it may be a challenge to kope seats especially at busy periods like weekend brunch to lunchtime. However, the cosiness adds to the charm and it’s a lovely spot to lose yourself in a good book, or get some remote work done.

Besides all-day breakfast dishes like granola, French toast, and their own twist on Eggs Benedict called Cheeky Eggs which features braised pork cheek, they also have a wide range of Western mains like burgers and pasta.

8. Drips Bakery Cafe

Not to be confused with Drip Singapore – a trendy club – Drips Bakery Cafe specialises in tarts, and they’ve been in the biz since 2010. Having branched out to outlets in Takashimaya and Tanjong Katong, their Tiong Bahru flagship is a spacious cafe where you can chill and dig into their extensive selection of tarts.

If you’d like something more substantial, they also serve all-day breakfast dishes like Smoked Salmon and Eggs, as well as shareable dishes like the Assorted Sausage Platter and 10in pizzas in flavours like Oriental Ducky and Meaty-licious.

While simple, Plain Vanilla honours home-baking traditions that keep recipes uncomplicated. To this day, this bakery is still one of the most popular places in Tiong Bahru to chill out at because of its open, airy space, and cute decor.

To get a sampling kit of their crowd favourites, we recommend getting a Box of 6 Cupcakes which comes with curated flavours. These are, namely, the Red Velvet, Salted Caramel, Chocolate Hazelnut, Earl Grey Lavender, Dark Chocolate Ganache, and Strawberry White Chocolate.

As with other PS.Cafes, you can expect a variety of cakes and tarts, and their famed Sticky Date Pudding. For the ultimate brunch experience, opt for the filling PS Big Breakfast. It comes with eggs on toast, bacon and sausage, baked beans, and for that extra fancy touch, a salad with fragrant honey truffle dressing.

We Put 9 Common Durian Myths To The Test, Like How To Reduce Heatiness & Get Rid Of The Smell https://thesmartlocal.com/read/durian-myths/ Tue, 25 Jun 2024 01:00:35 +0000 https://thesmartlocal.com/?p=198746 All facts no cap, or are these all baseless claims? We find out if some of the common durian myths we hear are actually true.

The post We Put 9 Common Durian Myths To The Test, Like How To Reduce Heatiness & Get Rid Of The Smell appeared first on TheSmartLocal - Singapore's Leading Travel and Lifestyle Portal.

Common durian myths

Whether or not you’ve tasted it, you have definitely smelled it – durian season is here once again, bringing with it our annual share of Mao Shan Wang, D24, and Red Prawn. No matter which is your favourite, you might have heard of some durian myths, like using durian seeds to get rid of the fruit’s smell when washing your hands.

While some of us swear by these durian myths, others aren’t sure but just do sua. If you’ve been wondering if those rumours are true, we tried some “hacks” for ourselves:

– How to get rid of durian smell –

1. Put a wedge of lemon in the fridge’s circulation fan

It’s best to consume the fruit as soon as possible, but if you plan to keep it in the refrigerator, transfer your durian into an airtight container before storing. If you have the time, cling wrap each piece of durian. Then, cut a fresh lemon and place the wedge right in front of the circulation fan. The lemon will help reduce the stench of the fruit in your refrigerator.

pandan leaves

Alternatively, you can also use pandan leaves. Cut a couple of leaves and tie them in a tight bunch. Pandan leaves also give off a slightly sweet scent so your refrigerator will smell pleasant. Just remember to switch the lemon wedge or pandan leaves out after 3-4 days.

Verdict: Half true – masks the smell.

2. Gargling water poured into the white husk of the durian

durian myths - stinky durian breath

The smell of the king of fruits is the biggest nemesis of the anti-durian club. But even if you live and breathe durian, it wouldn’t be fun having its pungent fragrance lingering on every time you exhale.

durian myths - gargling with durian husk

Mothers say: fill the empty husk of the durian with water and gargle it. We put it to the test and the first impression was that it felt like a comically weird thing to do. Not to mention, an uncomfortable one at that, since you’re likely to get pricked by the thorny shell.

Pro-tip: Transfer the durian water into a cup before gargling to avoid it spilling everywhere.

Breath-test wise, using just durian husk water didn’t do much and left a niap niap (dry) taste in the mouth. Adding salt into the mix, however, cleared the residual taste and smell almost completely. So KIV this if you’re heading out on a date after your durian snack.

Verdict: True – but add salt for added effectiveness.

3. Washing hands with durian seeds after feasting

durian myths - washing hands with durian seed

Unless you’re one of those monsters who eat durians with utensils, most of us have stinkin’ hands after enjoying the fruit.

Another common tip: wash your hands with the seed or husk to remove the smell. We put this to the test in our office – much to the displeasure of some durian-haters – with the following experiments:

  • Washing with just water (control test)
  • Washing with the durian husk
  • Washing with the durian seed

durian myths - washing hands with durian husk

It seemed like all 3 methods removed the stench at first – till we realised later that our noses might have been desensitised after spending the last hour near durians. A colleague helped us out with a sniff test and lo and behold, the myth is true.

Using the durian husk removed the stench more than tap water did, but the seeds surprisingly got rid of the smell almost entirely. Guess there is some truth to this old wives’ tale.

Verdict: True

4. Placing baking soda in cars

The smell of durian is pervasive. There’s no escaping the pungent odour, which is why you’ll see the fruit banned in most public spaces like buses and MRTs, as well as in hotels. No matter how sweet and creamy that flesh is, nobody wants the stank that comes with it after.

If the stench has lingered on in your cars, try adding a bowl of baking soda. According to science, most odours have an acidic chemical makeup, so using something with a higher alkaline content can help neutralise the smell.

You can leave the bowl overnight to significantly reduce the stink, but for persistent smells, switch out the baking soda daily, so it’s more effective. Do note you won’t be able to use the baking soda once it’s done its job – unless you want your car to taste like durian too.

Verdict: True

5. Eating durian & drinking alcohol can kill you

durian myths - durian and alcohol

One common “health warning” you might have heard through the grapevine is to never drink beer while consuming durian, lest it kills you.

For those who are worried to death about unwittingly consuming this combo, rest assured that it’s not true – according to science, at least.

Researchers at the University of Tsukuba did the experiment on 200 mice and while they got a little drunk, all came out a-ok. Of course, we aren’t mice and toeing the line of death isn’t the goal.

But according to other studies, the worst durian + alcohol might do for you is worsen a hangover, as durians make the liver work extra hard to break down its sugar and fat content, resulting in the slower metabolisation of alcohol. When both are consumed excessively, bloating and indigestion can also occur.

P.S.: We didn’t try this to avoid indigestion!

Verdict: False

6. Those with high blood pressure should avoid durians

durian myths - high blood pressure

The king of all fruits tastes so sinfully good, it’s easy to mistake it as an unhealthy treat that those with high cholesterol and blood pressure should steer clear away from. But some internet sleuthing will tell you that’s not quite the case.

Durians have zero cholesterol, meaning they aren’t a contributor to heart diseases. Some sources even make the debatable claim that durians can help reduce cholesterol and blood pressure levels thanks to having monounsaturated fat. Despite the “fat” in its name, this is good for your health, sorta like “good bacteria”.

One thing is for sure though: if you have high blood pressure or cholesterol levels, you can still eat durians if you want to. Just be sure to enjoy it in moderation as “durian OD” comes with other health consequences like a thickening waistline – durians do have a high calorie count!

Verdict: False

7. Eat mangosteen with durian to avoid falling sick

durian myths - seeing a doctor

According to traditional Chinese medicine, durians cause “heatiness”. You may have experienced sore throats, ulcers, or a super-phlegmy throat after an MSW feast. To combat this, Singaporeans widely believe that enjoying the fruit with “cooling” food and drinks can help alleviate these symptoms. These include:

  • Mangosteen
  • Chrysanthemum tea
  • Green tea
  • Coconut water
  • Salt water

It explains why you’ll see some of these being sold together with durians or are served with the thorny treat. While many friends and family have proclaimed that they help cool the body down, there’s been no proof from the Western medicine side of things that this works.

If you’re a firm believer in TCM though, go ahead with the coconut water, tea and mangosteen – they’re good for health anyway.

Verdict: True – but according to TCM only.

8. Durian boosts breast milk supply post-pregnancy

durian myths - durian boosts breast milk supply

Eating durians to boost breastmilk supply and quality is a little trick new moms may hear from confinement nannies.

The reasoning is that durians contain plenty of nutrients and that supposedly translates to “good” breast milk. However, this hasn’t actually been backed up by any scientific studies or research.

A colleague who recently gave birth also gave it a shot but reported that there was no difference, rendering this claim false in our books – at least until there’s further proof.

Verdict: False

9. Eating durians can help relieve insomnia

durian myths - relieve insomnia

A quick science lesson: durians contain a chemical called tryptophan. When consumed, it is converted into melatonin, a hormone that helps the body regulate sleep. In English: durians can help you sleep better, perfect for those who constantly toss and turn every night.

Of course it isn’t a cure-all, and how effective it is varies from person to person, depending on how much durian you devour. If you’re going to give this a shot, insomnia tips include exercising daily, practising breathing techniques, and switching off all devices an hour before bedtime.

Verdict: True, but results may vary.

Bonus: You can eat durian seeds

durian myths - eating durian seeds

Boil the seeds until they float, peel off the skin and take a bite. Unlike those of apples, durian seeds can actually be eaten, as ridiculous as the concept may be. Depending on the type of durian you have, the seed can either taste like chestnuts or super-bland potatoes, with a rough and starchy texture.

Verdict: True – but not very nice.
