Our Joyous Vesak 2026 – Thekchen Choling Vesak Day festival

May is set to end with a flurry of festivities, with both Hari Raya Haji and Vesak Day happening in the last week of the month. From 25th to 31st May 2026, Thekchen Choling Singapore is celebrating its Silver Jubilee with the biggest edition of its Vesak festival to date.

The week-long festival, Our Joyous Vesak, will be packed with cultural showcases, wellness events, family-friendly activities, and Singapore’s largest animal blessing ceremony – in case your furbaby needs a little divine TLC.

What is Our Joyous Vesak festival by Thekchen Choling Singapore?

Established in 2001, Thekchen Choling Singapore is a Tibetan Buddhist temple and registered charity organisation with the Ministry of Community, Culture, and Youth. Named after the monastery of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, the temple aims to help its lay and ordained followers to reach their potential for happier and more fulfilling lives.

The temple has been serving the community for 25 years through initiatives like Love Connect, a market that distributes free fresh produce to low-income families in collaboration with Jalan Besar Citizens’ Consultative Committee.

Each year, Thekchen Choling Singapore organises a Vesak festival to honour the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Shakyamuni Buddha. This year’s edition, Our Joyous Vesak festival, also commemorates the monastery’s longstanding history. Everyone is invited to join in the celebratory events, taking place from 25th to 31st May 2026 at the open field next to NEX.

What to expect at Our Joyous Vesak festival?

Unveiling Southeast Asia’s largest Shakyamuni Buddha thangka

Kicking off the annual festivities with a bang, a 4-storey-tall Giant Wish-Fulfilling Shakyamuni Buddha thangka, or scroll painting, will be unveiled on 25th May 2026 at 7pm. This is touted to be the largest Shakyamuni Buddha appliqué thangka in Southeast Asia, displayed alongside a 16-foot replica of the Bodhgaya Stupa. As part of this unveiling, there will be a gong strike, chanting, and a light-up ceremony.

Singapore’s biggest animal blessing ceremony

Back for its 5th edition, this year’s annual animal blessing ceremony is expected to welcome as many as 1,000 pawrents and furkids. Catch the dharma sharing on how to be a better guru for your pet at 6pm, followed by the animal blessing ceremony by Venerable Sanghas at 7pm on 26th May 2026. There will also be merit-making activities throughout the festival, where your four-legged pals can earn a little extra good karma.

Heart of Giving Market

In line with their community-oriented values, Thekchen Choling will be co-organising the Heart of Giving Market with Braddell Heights Constituency, which is also commemorating its 50th anniversary this year. Happening on 30th May 2026 at 2pm, lower-income families living in the area can head down to the market to get their hands on fresh produce and household products for free.

Grand Dharma Light Circumambulation

No registration is required, so you can drop by and join the procession happening at 8pm.

Vesak Day Prayer for World Peace & Harmony

Free playgrounds in Singapore

Playgrounds are a fail-proof way for kids to unleash all their energy, and a guaranteed spot to lift any kidult’s spirits. In fact, while many of us think public playgrounds are catered to children, there are many with equally thrilling slides and rope courses that kiddos and adults alike will get a good kick out of.

From family-friendly playgrounds ideal for your crawling tot, to others with 4-storey climbing structures and 34m slides, here are the best free playgrounds in Singapore to let your inner child – or your actual child – run wild.

What to prepare before visiting a playground in Singapore

When your child is scampering all over the playground, you’ll want to make sure that they’re wearing proper footwear so they don’t trip over themselves or the playground equipment. Running shoes and strap-on sandals would be the most appropriate. Loose slippers and slides might be a tripping hazard for young ones.

If you’re planning for some water play, then remember to pack a change of clothes shirt, undergarments, and shorts –  for both yourself and your child, so you’re not soaking wet going home. Packing a couple of Ziploc bags for the pile will also help.

Of course, pack plenty of water to keep your kids hydrated in Singapore’s sweltering heat. Sunscreen and a cap are definitely helpful in warding off harmful UV rays, with wet wipes coming in handy to clean up your kids’ muck-covered faces. Snacks are a thoughtful inclusion, in case the kids get peckish after a whole day’s worth of play. Of course, you’d need a handy backpack to stow away all this barang barang.

1. Mandai Wildlife West

Next to Bird Paradise

Mandai Wildlife West
Look out for the giant waterfall at the entrance to the playground.

The next time your family has an outing to the Mandai Wildlife Reserve, have your kids burn off any pent up energy at Mandai Wildlife West. Located just next to Bird Paradise, this free-to-enter park has 5 nature-themed playgrounds for little ones to run amok.

Mandai Wildlife West

If they fancy themselves a Dora the Explorer or her cousin Diego, they’ll love climbing all over the wooden bridges and mini rope ladders. But it’s not all play here either. The playgrounds have been designed to mimic mangroves and forests for a teachable moment on ecosystems.

If the lil’ ones still have gas left in the tank, then head next door to KidzWorld, nestled in the Singapore Zoo to complete your day out. Alternatively, checking out the nearby Rainforest Wild ASIA is an option that can only end in a fun adventure. However, do note that you’ll need to purchase entry tickets to get to these 2 areas.

2. Causeway Point

IG-worthy dinosaur sculptures & play areas

Dino-lovers will enjoy this Causeway Point water playground with dinosaur-themed elements.

There are a couple of unique playground equipment to try out, such as an “erupting” water volcano fitted with 1 wet and 1 dry slide on each end. There’s also a rib-cage-shaped swing structure for kiddos to rest on. For cute pics, pose next to the colourful dinosaur sculptures built around the playground.

If junior loves splashing about in water, then you’ll want to check out these other water parks in Singapore too.

3. Admiralty Park

Longest outdoor public park slide in SG

Admiralty Park

You’ve probably seen this roller slide online before, and for good reason. After all, the 34m slide at Admiralty Park is the longest public park slide in Singapore.

Beyond its famous roller slide, the entire playground is pretty much slides galore too, with a whopping 26 of these. They include an array of regular, roller, and tubed variations for slide-lovers to go nuts in. Of course, it also has regular net courses and climbing areas for a good workout.

You can cool off afterwards by soaking in the aircon at Republic Polytechnic, which is a stone’s throw away and open to the public.

4. Oasis Water Park

5,600sqm of water play

If you’re looking for a huge water playground, the Oasis Water Park is an aptly named playground in Yishun with a large water play area for kids and adults alike to splash around in. It includes features such as water buckets, mist, sprays, and even a shallow pool to wade around in.

Those who prefer to remain dry can chill around on the surrounding benches, or head over to a dry play zone with giant paintings of old-school games such as hopscotch on the ground.

5. Jelutung Harbour Park

Wheelchair accessible merry-go-round

The Jelutung Harbour Park is another neighbourhood playground with water facilities such as cannons and sprays to enjoy a cool splash under. It’s ship-themed, so you’ll spot structures such as fishes, wind sails and ship wheels scattered around.

There’s also a dry play area with the usual playground essentials, from slides to climbing nets. A notable feature is its inclusive merry-go-round structure that’s built into the ground, making it accessible by wheelchair.

6. Sembawang Park

Shipwreck-themed playground

Sembawang Park

Those looking for fun Instagrammable things to do can check out Sembawang Park. The play area is interestingly shaped to resemble that of a shipwreck, with some parts of the structure sunken into the ground, and others at a slightly tilted angle.

The playground is equipped with climbing ropes, bridges, and walls to get around, plus a metal tube slide.

Sembawang Park

7. Circle Green Park

3 playgrounds & climbing dome

Circle Green Park

If you’re up for a climb, the 3-storey climbing dome at Circle Green Park will be enough of a reason to pay it a visit. The netted structure has a ton of connected ropes for you to Spider-Man your way up, before ending off with a slide down from the top.

Younger kids and those who aren’t big fans of heights can stick to the pirate ship section of the playground, which has easier nets to navigate and a smaller slide.

Circle Green Park

8. Canberra Park

Abundant swings & net play structures

Canberra Park

Swings are a playground fave for many of us. They’re just the right balance of fun and thrilling, plus they don’t require much energy for those of us who just want a chill time. If swing sets are your go-to playground ride, you’ll enjoy spending time at Canberra Park.

With a larger-than-usual selection of 10 swing types, you’ll no longer have to wait in line to chope the 2-3 swing sets that playgrounds typically have.

Canberra Park

Work up more of a sweat by climbing this relatively complicated net structure that features intertwined ropes and ladders. After that mini workout, you can swing by Bukit Canberra afterwards to refuel at the 44-stall hawker centre.

9. Hougang Citrine

Otter and fishing village-themed playgrounds

Hougang CitrineImage credit: prick prick via Google Maps

Located at Hougang Citrine Block 179A is an otter-themed playground that will have both parents and children squealing in delight. Little ones are invited to duck into the adorable structure to cross a rope bridge and slide out the other end. There’s also a see-saw with fish for seats, as well as a log-like tunnel to hide in.

Hougang CitrineImage credit: prick prick via Google Maps

Just a short stroll away at Block 179B, a fishing village-themed playground awaits. Along with the otter-themed one, it’s another reference to the origin of the neighbourhood’s name which means “back of the river”. Here, kiddos can ascend a tall tower by clinging onto ropes within, and go “fishing” with the oversized fishing rods with reels that spin satisfyingly.

10. Hougang Olive

Chicken-themed playground with 3 climbing towers & a 2-storey “nest”

Hougang OliveImage credit: Lin lin via Google Maps

Hougang Olive’s playground is definitely built with daring little ones in mind. Cheekily chicken-themed, it has 3 massive towers connected by rope bridges for children to take on, with each one having a different method of entry. Once your kid is all knackered out from all that climbing, they can take 5 at the hammocks underneath.

Hougang OliveImage credit: Lin lin via Google Maps

Go past the cute chick cut-outs, and you’ll find a 2-storey nest-like structure. Apart from heading to the second level for a nice vantage point overlooking the playground, there are discs suspended from the ceiling to step on, and a slide to exit the nest.

11. PropNex Family Zone

Mini GBTB Supertrees to climb

PropNex Family ZoneImage credit: Gardens by the Bay

One playground that can be found on the grounds of GBTB is the PropNex Family Zone. Families coming here for a day out in the sun will be immediately greeted by a huge sculpture of the friendly Becky Bunny, the Families for Life mascot.

PropNex Family ZoneImage adapted from: Gardens by the Bay

Apart from scampering all about, kids can learn about the importance of good family values through quotes plastered on the playground equipment. Imaginative kids can then play pretend at a market stall storefront, or hop on the nest swing with a new friend.

PropNex Family ZoneImage credit: Gardens by the Bay

Undoubtedly, your kid will want to explore the pair of towers that vaguely resemble the Gardens’ Supertrees. After ascending a flight of stairs and crossing a rickety bridge, they can whoosh down a snaking slide. For some friendly competition, there are 2 obstacle courses nearby to conquer – one for younger tots and another for older children – complete with built-in timers.

12. Jubilee Park

Child-friendly obstacle courses & swings

Another sandy playground paradise in the middle of lush greenery, the Jubilee Park Playground at Fort Canning Park has obstacle courses that both older and younger kids can enjoy.

Little ones can climb and crawl around low-lying parts of the wooden obstacle course, where there are long flat-laying logs to manoeuvre. Meanwhile, older children can explore the more challenging bits where a little more climbing is required.

Beyond an obstacle course, there are also inclusive swings with protective features for smaller-sized tots, as well as regular swings for the rest to enjoy.

If you find yourself at Gardens By The Bay with the fam, be sure to check out their Children’s Playground. One of its most popular zones is its wet play area, which has sprinklers, water buckets, and a ton of free space for kids to zoom around.

There are also other dry zones, including a 130m treehouse trail with obstacles such as ladders and ropes for older children to explore.

14. Great World Playland

Hot air balloon & pirate ship structures

Great World PlaylandImage credit: Play Point

This travel-themed playground at Great World is a great place for your kids to learn more about different transportation modes. From hot air balloons to pirate ships, the Great World Playland has themed play structures suitable for kids of all ages.

Older ones would enjoy making their way up a jungle-gym-like rope course at the hot air balloon play structure, whereas little ones can enjoy playing in less challenging areas including a mini pirate ship and train structure.

Great World Playland

15. Tiong Bahru Park

Tilted train-themed playground

Tiong Bahru Park

At first glance, this aesthetic tilted train-themed playground at Tiong Bahru Park looks like a relatively easy one to navigate. While it may appear to be an unassuming IG photo spot, it actually has some pretty challenging zones. You’ll also spot several features such as tube slides, climbing walls, and even a flying fox set at the front of the playground.

Tiong Bahru Park
The interior of the train cabins will make for a pretty fun challenge to crawl through, due to its twisted angle and build.

16. Ubi Grove

Vehicle-themed structures & road markings

If your little one can’t wait till they’re 18 to get behind the wheel, head on over to the playground at Ubi Grove Block 358.

Ubi GroveImage credit: Playpoint

It has a couple of “vehicles” that children can step inside to pretend that they’re cruising in a driving circuit to prepare them for the ones at the various driving schools. There’s even a small gas station where they can learn about the pains of refuelling their ride in this economy. A doughnut-shaped climbing structure is also nearby, in case they get bored with waiting in traffic.

Ubi Grove Playground

17. Coastal Playgrove

4-storey climbing tower & giant slides

Coastal Playgrove

This one’s perfect for height-lovers. The Coastal Playgrove houses an impressive 4-storey climbing tower with an 11.9m slide down. The climb up poses a fun challenge, even for older kids and adults.

Coastal Playgrove

Once you’ve hauled yourself to the top, reward yourself with a thrilling 11.9m slide down from the 4th storey. If that’s a little too daunting, take the alternative slide from the 3rd storey instead – just 7.3m down.

Those who are afraid of heights will still get to try these slides, as the playground has staircase access to each level of the climbing tower, so you can get to the top without climbing. Tots will also get their share of fun at child-friendly areas including mini climbing nets, sandpits, and a wading pool.

18. Tampines Green Forest Park

3-storey towers to climb, with a smaller sand-pit playground for younger kids

Tampines Green Forest Park

If your kid’s gung-ho enough to brave high elements, this one would be right up their alley. The free playground at Tampines Green Forest Park consists of several soaring towers to take on, culminating in an exciting ride down a lengthy slide.

Reaching the slide isn’t a piece of cake though, as you’ll need nimble limbs to navigate the suspended bridges. Tread carefully on the suspended rope bridges, or swing from the overhead monkey bars to make it across.

Tampines Green Forest Park

If your kiddo isn’t too keen on taking on the 3-storey towers, they can settle into the sand pits of the nearby pint-sized playground instead. It consists of multiple poles and bars to climb on as well as little bridges to cross, which lead to mellow slides down into the soft sand.

19. Dakota Breeze playground

Aviation-inspired structures to climb on

Dakota Breeze playgroundImage credit: Playpoint Singapore

Children with aspirations of conquering the skies as a pilot can start their journey at the Dakota Breeze playground. The aviation-inspired space has a plane-like structure formed with bars and ropes. Curious tots can climb all over the frame and balance on the cargo net in the middle while imagining they are soaring in the sky.

Dakota Breeze playgroundImage credit: Playpoint Singapore

Once they’re done exploring the skies, they can land by the heliport tower, where after crawling through a narrow passageway, they will get to make their escape via a whizz down a slide. The playground’s padded flooring is a nice touch, giving you one less hazard to worry about.

20. Bidadari Park Adventure Playwoods

Nature-inspired playground with a 5m-tall treehouse

Bidadari Park Adventure Playwoods
The top of the treehouse houses an observation deck, perfect for some bird watching.

Bidadari Park is famous for its vibrant birdlife – though they can be tricky to spot from the ground. Not to worry though, you can get a better look from Adventure Playwoods’ 5m-tall treehouse. But if that’s too static, you can just zoom around the playground’s tall slides, conquer its climbing nets, and ride your way down via a mini zipline.

Bidadari Park

21. Marina Cove Playground

3,500sqm playground with different play zones

Marina Cove Playground

Big play areas are usually associated with indoor playgrounds, but Marina Cove playground at East Coast Park dispels that myth, with its 3,500sqm area giving your kids the chance to play under the sun. The playground features an 8m-tall lighthouse section for the older kiddos, while smaller tots can interact with the sensory play panels – a great way to boost their psychomotor skills while having fun.

Once playtime’s over, bring the fam to the nearby McDonald’s, but not before rinsing off at the adjacent toilets and showers.

For those who’d trade asphalt roads for train tracks, look no further than the Teck Whye View playground. It’s locomotive-themed and has 2 trains for little ones to climb aboard, one green and one red. You can even join for the ride, as there is plenty of space in the cabins connected to them.

The playground also has 2 climbing towers for older kids to explore; one of them even sports a clock, so passengers won’t be late when boarding the trains in the back. At the top, choose to speed down a standard tube slide, or spiral down to ground level with the coiled slide.

Sheltered 3-storey jungle gym & nature-themed play areas

Bulim ParkImage adapted from: NParks

Westies, you’ll be glad to know that Bulim Park in Jurong West is now fully open following the completion of its West section. The kids have an entire 3-storey jungle gym to themselves, and it’s sheltered by the overhead walkway, so they can play here even when the afternoon sun’s out.

If your little one isn’t too keen about scaling the rope nets, they can instead have a go at the nature-themed play areas just opposite the jungle gym. Some obstacles to tackle include thin logs to test your balance, elevated mounds with rocks to grip on, a wobbly bridge, and wooden stepping stones to skip across.

24. Boon Lay Glade

Fire station-themed playground with a fire truck structure & fireman poles

Another playground in the West that you can’t miss is the one at Boon Lay Glade. Not only is it eye-catching with its streaks of red, it’s also wonderfully themed after a fire station; a nod to the old Jurong Station which once occupied the land it sits on now.

Kids can climb aboard a fire truck-like structure to fiddle with the play panels within or roleplay as brave firefighters. They can also scale a play tower that resembles one you might find at a legit fire station; the winding slide is also designed to look like a hose squirting water, and there are firefighter’s poles to skid down for a quick escape.

Address: 238 Boon Lay Drive, Singapore 640238

25. Bukit Gombak Park

Rock climbing wall & butterfly garden

Bukit Gombak Park

The set-up of the Bukit Gombak Park is pretty straightforward to get around, with fun little elements to try out. This includes stepping stones to test your balance on, and a rock climbing wall that kids can crawl up.

At the top of the slope, you’ll be able to slide back down to the ground floor, but be sure to check out the butterfly garden first before you head down.

The Alice In Wonderland-themed playground is peppered with many Easter eggs, such as the pair of big and tiny doors at its entrance with a “drink me” shrinking potion. There are even life-sized figurines of characters such as the Tweedle boys, so realistic that you’ll find yourself questioning if you’ve really been teleported into Wonderland.

Alice in Wonderland playground & Woodlands Vista Park

Queenstown isn’t the only neighbourhood with an Alice in Wonderland-themed playground. Up in the north, Woodlands Vista Park is another playground that features icons from the novel. You’ll spot the Cheshire Cat, Caterpillar, and even a row of giant playing cards hidden among giant slides and climbing gyms.

The highlight of Bukit Batok Neighbourhood Park is its 3-storey climbing structure and slide. While you’ll need to climb all the way up to ride the slide down, those who aren’t keen on heights can still enjoy navigating a rope obstacle course at its base.

28. Clusia Clove

Auto-disinfecting water play area & tidal pool

Clusia Clove

Clusia Clove is the place to bring young’uns for some messy water play, with the assurance of cleanliness thanks to its auto-disinfection system. This is because the water, which comes from both Jurong Lake and general rain, goes through a natural cleansing filter to rid it of dirt particles.

The playground’s water areas include an eco pond and even a ripple tide pool. For a full beach experience, there’s also a sand pit to explore.

Clusia Clove

Beyond the wet area, there’s also a dry Forest Ramble playground with 13 zones named after swamp animals. There, you can find a zipline, long tube slides, and trampolines.

Once done, you can unwind by strolling around the Chinese and Japanese Gardens, which recently underwent a facelift.

32. MacPherson Weave

HDB flat maze & fruit-themed playgrounds

Folks residing in MacPherson have a cluster of fun spots to bring the kiddos to. At MacPherson Weave, you’ve got 3 playgrounds to visit, each with its own unique features, and the best part? They’re all within walking distance from one another.

Starting with the one at Blocks 99A and 97A, it sports an ode to Toa Payoh’s iconic dragon slide with 2 dragon sculptures of its own. There’s also a small maze of scaled-down HDB blocks for games of hide-and-seek, with a telescope mounted nearby to gaze off into the distance.

Over at Blocks 99B and 95C, you can go wild at a watermelon-themed playground. From a watermelon merry-go-round to slides sprouting from melon slices, there’s much fun to be had. You’ll find a jackfruit-themed playground at Blocks 95 and 100 which feature domes with the fruit’s grainy skin, while leaf-inspired canopies overhead shield little ones from the sun’s rays.

33. Alkaff Courtview

Minimalistic playground with meadow, rocks & forest zones

If vividly coloured playgrounds are too overstimulating, swing by the one at Alkaff Courtview at Bidadari. It’s refreshingly minimalistic, with its equipment and layout consisting of clean, geometric shapes.

Alkaff CourtviewImage credit: Playpoint

It’s split into 3 distinct parts: the meadow, rocks, and forest zones. The meadow zone is supposed to simulate what a rabbit might see as it burrows away at the ground. Features here include a small mound with a built-in trampoline in the middle to bounce on, wooden boxes to hide in, and stepping stones to skip on.

Alkaff CourtviewImage credit: Playpoint

At the rocks zone, the various structures are covered in rock climbing holds for extra grip, so they’re definitely meant to clamber on. Meanwhile, the forest zone consists of, well, a forest of upright wooden poles which mimic thin tree trunks. Kids can try their hand at escaping a small maze, chill out on hammocks, or have a go on the multiple swings here.

34. Play @ Heights Park

Ziplines, trampoline & water play

Play @ Heights Park

The Play @ Heights Park is a hidden gem in Toa Payoh, with a ton of wet and dry zones to explore. These include dry sandpit areas to a “splash zone” with water jets and wading pools.

Play @ Heights Park

We’re certain that not only kids, but also adults, will enjoy riding on the zipline and going crazy on the built-in trampolines.

Play @ Heights Park

To top it all off, there’s even an exercise area for our fellow fitspo friends or parents to enjoy while the rest have fun splashing around the play areas. Once they’re done splashing about, your kiddos can rinse off at one of the outdoor shower stalls.

Unlike the usual colourful playgrounds we’re familiar with, the Toa Payoh Crest playground has a unique structure. It looks like a swampland.

Young’uns with a knack for climbing will probably get the most fun out of this playground. The concept for this is a pretty cool one – visitors can trod their way up by climbing up the undulating slopes with the help of built-in ropes, before finishing with a rewarding slide back down.

There are plenty of cool heritage spots scattered around Singapore, but none lets you play with your kids in a sandpit like the iconic Dragon Playground at Toa Payoh. Bring some sand buckets along too, so you and your child can build your own miniature dragon out of sand, but more importantly, build a lasting core memory together.

Decked out in wooden branch-like structures and a sandy floor, COMO Adventure Grove is the perfect setting for a slightly more rugged playtime. The ropey play structures here will let kids live out their Tarzan dreams as they swing from “branch” to “branch”.

Its highlight is a 5.8m-tall Weeping Fig tree structure, with extending branches fitted with ropes and swings. The main tree structure itself is a vertical climbing rope course, with a 4m metal slide at the very top.

P.S. There’s also a huge durian structure for durian lovers to strike a pose.

Being a parent and caregiver is no easy task, especially when you have to keep an eye on both of them at public parks. At Pek Kio Park, you won’t have to worry about that, as features for both the elderly and children are situated right beside each other.

Seniors can take a stroll through the therapeutic garden, before playing a game with their grandkids at the petanque court. When the kids have tired of petanque, they can head over to the log obstacle course to practise their balancing skills.

Ask a group of kids what their dream job is, and chances are you’ll hear someone say they want to be a firefighter. While it’s a little early for them to really become one, they can already start pretending to save lives at the Boon Lay Glade playground.

Where is the Boon Lay Glade playground located?

The Boon Lay Glade playground is located near Block 239A Boon Lay Drive, about a 20-minute walk from Boon Lay MRT Station. Alternatively, hop on bus 240 from Boon Lay Interchange and alight at Block 239A.

What to expect at the Boon Lay Glade playground?

The first thing that you’d probably notice is the 7-storey hose tower.

This tower wasn’t just built for the playground – it’s actually been around since 1975, back when the old Jurong Fire Station first opened. Fire rescue and hose drills often took place here, making it a key training ground for firefighters.

Jurong Fire Station History

The fire station has since moved to its current location at Jurong West Street 26 in 2017 to make way for the new Boon Lay Glade estate. Fun fact: the current Jurong Fire Station is also Singapore’s 1st to have a firefighter slide.

These days, you can still get a glimpse into its past – head to Level 1 of the refurbished hose tower for a mini history lesson. You can also head up to Level 2, though the higher levels are blocked off for safety reasons.

Fire station-themed playground

In line with the hose tower and the area’s history, the whole playground is decked out in a fire rescue theme. Right next to the tower, you’ll find these adorable little emergency vehicles that your kids can hop onto and “drive”.

Boon Lay Glade Big Firetruck

And if those firetrucks weren’t enough for your young ones, head over to the further side of the playground. Not only is the firetruck here bigger, but it has interactive elements too – show your kids the best strategies to win Tic Tac Toe, or teach them how to read a compass.

The little ones can also tire themselves out here. Let them slide down the 2 slides or get behind the firetruck’s steering wheel – no licence required, obviously.

For more thrills, there’s another tower right next to the firetruck. This is the kid-friendly version of the hose tower – let your kids live out their firefighter dreams as they go down the fireman poles and 2 slides.

And make sure to keep an eye out for all the firefighting details here, from the slides designed like water hoses to the “fire” blazing above.

Firefighting motifs around the estate

Look around the area, and you’ll realise that it’s not just the playground that’s inspired by the fire station. The entire estate pays homage to the old Jurong Fire Station, with buildings designed around the iconic hose tower motif.

Each block even comes with its own firefighting-themed element – try and see how many you can spot.

Play like a firefighter at the Boon Lay Glade playground

If you’re looking for a unique playground for your kid to run around, make this playground your next stop. You’ll even get to learn a little about our firefighting history as your little one fights imaginary fires of their own.

There’s A New Family-Friendly Cinema Hall At Shaw Lido, With Movie Tickets From $11 https://thesmartlocal.com/read/shaw-lido-dreamers/ Mon, 06 Apr 2026 09:01:15 +0000 https://thesmartlocal.com/?p=387149 A gentler environment for the very young ones.

Dreamers at Shaw Lido

Any parent knows that taking young kids to the cinema can sometimes feel like a bit of a gamble. Best-case scenario, they’re completely glued to the screen with popcorn in hand. Worst-case scenario, you’re dealing with restless fidgeting and the stress of trying not to disturb everyone else in the hall.

That’s probably why Shaw Theatres has opened Dreamers at Lido, a family-friendly cinema hall designed with little ones in mind. Think comfy beanbag seating, softer sound levels, and gentle lighting that feels a lot less overwhelming than a regular movie hall.

What’s Dreamers by Shaw Theatres?

Dreamers by Shaw Theatres is a family-friendly cinema concept made specially for parents with young kids in tow. The idea is simple: make movie outings feel a lot less stressful and instead, more enjoyable for little ones and their grown-ups.

Instead of the usual dark, booming cinema setup that can be a bit much for younger children, Dreamers offers a gentler environment that feels more cosy. The hall is decked out in calming colours, with gentle lighting and softer sound levels that are easier on young eyes and ears.

While Dreamers halls have already opened at Jewel and Balestier, the new Lido outlet gives families another cosy option right in town for a more relaxed movie outing.

Beanbag seating lets families lounge through the movie

One thing we absolutely love about Dreamers at Shaw Lido: the beanbag seating. Instead of the usual upright cinema chairs, the hall comes with 2 tiers of comfy beanbags, so the whole experience feels a lot more laid-back from the moment you step in.

Families can choose between the main floor, which sits closer to the screen, or the upper deck if you prefer a slightly elevated view. Seating is also free and unassigned, so you just have to come in, find a spot that works for the fam, and settle in.

Dreamers at Shaw Lido - children seats

“Huh, only 2 tiers? Can see meh?”

There’s no need to worry about blocked views. To make sure everyone still gets a decent line of sight, the number of beanbags available per session has been kept limited. There are a couple of things to note, though: the upper deck comes with a child-safe glass barrier, and from some seats, the glass panel may slightly affect the viewing experience.

Still, for parents with little ones who’d rather sprawl out than sit stiffly through a movie, this setup feels like a pretty solid win.

Tickets from $11 for kids

Dreamers at Shaw Lido - coloured kids theatre

To mark the opening, families can catch The Magic Faraway Tree at Dreamers by Shaw Theatres. It’s based on the beloved Enid Blyton books, bringing magical characters like Silky, Moonface, and Saucepan Man to the big screen in a heartwarming adventure that feels like a pretty perfect fit for a colourful, family-first cinema hall like this.

As for ticket prices, kids above 90cm and below 13 years old pay $11 during off-peak periods and $14 during peak periods, while toddlers below 90cm get in for free. Adult tickets are priced at $18 off-peak and $22 during peak periods.

Catch a movie at Dreamers at Shaw Lido

Dreamers at Shaw Lido is a much more relaxed alternative to the usual cinema experience. Plus, you’ll be surrounded by other families too – there’s no need to worry about kids having zoomies.

So if you’ve been looking for a lower-stress movie outing with the little ones, this might just be your sign to plan one. Especially if the idea of cuddling up for a family film sounds better than spending the whole time shushing your child in a regular movie hall.

Bukit Batok Library

After 2 years of renovations, Bukit Batok Library has finally reopened on 27th March 2026, and there’s more good news for early birds: the library is also extending its operating hours, opening from 9am to 9pm.

Located in West Mall, the 3-storey library is now double its original size at over 2,700sqm, with almost twice the number of seats as before. We went down to check out all the new spaces, from relaxation zones with surround-sound speakers to interactive exhibits.

What’s new at Bukit Batok Library?

New interiors inspired by Little Guilin

newly revamped bukit batok library - singland soundscapeImage credit: National Library Board

When you think of Bukit Batok, the iconic rocky cliffs of Little Guilin in Bukit Batok Town Park probably come to mind. That’s exactly what inspired the library’s redesign, with fake stalactites hanging from the ceiling and textured, cave-like walls.

SingLand Soundscape

The library has also recreated the tranquil vibe of Little Guilin through the SingLand Soundscape – a sensory experience featuring custom calming soundtracks made from field recordings of everyday sounds from around the neighbourhood.

Composed by Singaporean sound artist Mervin Wong, these soundtracks accompanied us as we explored Levels 1 and 2. A first for our national libraries, these audio-led experiences are intended to encourage visitors to connect with their environment and practise mindfulness.

newly revamped bukit batok library - sound caveImage credit: National Library Board

There are 4 separate sections to explore: Sound Cave, Time Caverns, Sound Library, and Sound Pavilion.

As we took the escalator up to Level 2, we heard the notes of the 1st track, Embrace, fade into the 2nd track, Nature, creating a calming atmosphere.

Sound Cave

When we entered the Sound Cave, it was hard to believe we were still standing inside a library. Surrounded by rocky walls and soothing sounds emanating from the speakers around the room, it almost felt like we had teleported into a cosy cave separate from the hubbub of the outside world.

newly revamped bukit batok library - sound cave

As we relaxed on the stone seats, the walls lit up with text identifying the sounds of Bukit Batok’s green spaces and city life, from the familiar chirps of straw-headed bulbuls to the low hums of engines.

Time Caverns

Exploring deeper into the “cave”, we entered the Time Caverns, an interactive exhibit with 4 zones, each highlighting different segments of Bukit Batok’s history.

The exhibit will whisk you on a journey through time, from the area’s pre-war agricultural roots to its industrialisation, the days of the Former Ford Factory, the hardships of the Japanese Occupation, and right up to the present day.

newly revamped bukit batok library - time caverns

If slogging through long and dreary history textbooks wasn’t your thing in school, don’t worry, this is nothing like that.

Here, Bukit Batok’s lesser-known secrets come alive through photographs, sounds, and oral history recordings curated from the National Library and the National Archives of Singapore’s collections.

newly revamped bukit batok library - former ford factory

We learnt about the interesting theories behind Bukit Batok’s name – some people believed the hill resembled a human skull, hence the name “batok” –  and explored the area’s role in WWII when the Former Ford Factory became an assembly site for Allied fighter planes in 1941.

Fun fact: Each of the miniature 3D car models lining the Former Ford Factory zone counts for roughly 500 cars. Together, they represent the 150,000 total automobiles produced before the factory’s closure in 1980.

newly revamped bukit batok library - time caverns

Don’t miss this little hole-in-the-wall exhibit like we almost did. The 3rd zone of the Time Caverns might resemble an industrial warehouse, but take a closer look and you’ll find windows into scenes of everyday life during the Japanese Occupation.

newly revamped bukit batok library - interactive exhibits time cavern

There are also headphones you can pick up to listen to survivors sharing their memories from that time.

Bookworms, here’s your chance to become a storyteller yourself. From now till 30th September 2026, you can add photos, videos, sounds, and even websites to a digital archive under the Bukit Batok Memories project.

Alternatively, add your memories on the spot by scanning the QR code on the digital displays in the final zone of the Time Caverns.

newly revamped bukit batok library - stamp rally

Be sure to keep an eye out for the 4 stamp rally stations found at each zone of the Time Caverns. At each station, you’ll get to pick up a free bookmark and emboss it with 4 unique stamp-style designs, each featuring the area’s most iconic creatures, from the Sunda pangolin to the flying lemur.

Sound Library

newly revamped bukit batok library - sound libraryImage credit: National Library Board

Gone are the days of mixtapes and cassettes, but in the Sound Library, you’ll have the chance to relive the magic of listening to a playlist made just for you, but this time, it’s curated by the community.

Here, you can browse an extensive collection of audio clips from NLB’s Singapore Memories initiative, dedicated to preserving the nation’s history, culture, and daily life.

newly revamped bukit batok library - sound library

We had fun rediscovering the sounds we often take for granted, from the hollers of the neighbourhood karang guni to lion dance performances and coconut smashing during Thaipusam.

All 4 booths feature albums centred around themes that capture the essence of our nation – Festivals & Arts, Community, Environment, and Animals.

newly revamped bukit batok library - audiobook display

Next to the Sound Library, we also spotted a first-of-its-kind digital display that lets you listen to audiobook previews and borrow them on-the-spot with a simple scan of the book’s QR code.

Sound Pavilion

newly revamped bukit batok library - sound pavilionImage credit: National Library Board

The last section of SingLand Soundscape is the Sound Pavilion, an open seating area inspired by tea houses, with warm cove lighting and real ceramic teapots on display for that extra zen vibe. Even better, you can bring beverages like coffee and tea into this area, as long as they’re secured with a lid.

newly revamped bukit batok library - sound pavilion

In this section, you’ll find shelves stocked with books on analogue hobbies like cooking and birdwatching, curated to fit the theme of mindfulness.

While we browsed, the 3rd and final soundtrack, Tranquillity, echoed throughout the space, setting the perfect mood for some light reading or much-needed R&R.

newly revamped bukit batok library - study spots

We also noticed that the private booths next to the Sound Pavilion come with charging points, great for remote working or a quiet study session.

If you didn’t manage to chope a private booth in time, don’t worry – there are more seats available at the Multimedia and Study Zone on Level 2. Be sure to book a seat in advance via the NLB mobile app (App Store | Google Play) to secure your spot as it can get crowded pretty quickly.

newly revamped bukit batok library - multimedia & study zone

While Levels 1 to 3 are accessible via the gantry at the entrance from 9am to 9pm, night owls can also stay an hour longer at the Multimedia and Study Zone until 10pm. To enter, you’ll need to scan the library member QR code in your NLB mobile app, so be sure to update the app and keep it handy.

Saff will only be on site from 11am onwards, so it might be better to drop by later in the day, just in case you require assistance.

Interactive zones & reading nooks for all ages

Also on Level 2, we found a cosy corner called the Ripples Circle. We were drawn to the room’s central display, which is inspired by gravel raking in Zen gardens. The kinetic art display features a magnetised ball that moves through the sand with as many as 29 unique patterns.

newly revamped bukit batok library -ripples circle

Around the room, you’ll also find cushioned seats and multiple charging points, making it easy to work or study comfortably.

Moving up to Level 3, you’ll find it hard to miss the colourful, gem-like alcoves in the Children’s Zone. When it’s not being used for storytelling sessions, this snug space is perfect for some one-on-one reading time with your little one if they need a break from all the sounds and sights on Level 2.

Enhanced digital discovery tools that make it easier to explore the library’s catalogue

On the same level, you can play around with a whole host of upgraded book discovery tools, saving you from the extra time and headache of looking for fresh reads to add to your TBR list.

newly revamped bukit batok library - scan-n-discoverImage credit: National Library Board

Thanks to the new Scan-n-Discover display, you’ll be able to find your next favourite read faster than you can open the Goodreads app or scroll through BookTok. All you have to do is scan the QR code on the library label of a book you’ve been loving to get recommendations of 18 similar physical and eBooks that you can check out the same day.

The borrowing station and book drop are also conveniently located right next to the Scan-n-Discover area, making it super convenient to grab your books and go.

Another helpful tool to check out is the Infinite Shelves, which are virtual shelves displaying eBooks from popular collections like Travel, Health, and Adult Fiction.

With this set-up, you won’t have to scroll through the NLB app only to find your book is on loan. All eBooks displayed on the Infinite Shelves are available to borrow instantly by scanning the book’s QR code, which means you’ll still get your reading fix even if a physical copy isn’t available.

March holiday activities in 2026

School’s almost out, which means it’s time to start planning ways to keep the kids entertained. This year, the March holiday will run from 14th to 22nd March 2026, with an additional day off in lieu on 23rd March 2026, thanks to Hari Raya Puasa falling on Saturday, 21st March.

With 10 whole days to keep your kids off their screens, we’ve rounded up a bunch of March holiday activities in 2026 to suit every little personality, from hands-on learning experiences to playground fun.

Pixie Trixie Playhouse

Adults are not the only ones who can enjoy relaxing spa days and feel refreshed with a makeover. There’s also Pixie Trixie Playhouse, a place specially for kids to enjoy the same glow-up experience, and it definitely won’t be the least bit boring for them.

What is Pixie Trixie Playhouse?

It’s a kids’ spa where both boys and girls can get pampered and enjoy a makeover experience before heading out to play in their glam looks.

You don’t have to accompany your kids throughout the entire session, as drop-off services are provided. After all, parents deserve a break too.

What to expect at Pixie Trixie Playhouse

They’ll then grab a mini shopping basket and a shopping list, and proceed to pick from a wide spectrum of nail polish colours, comfortable spa headbands, 8 different scented bath bombs, cute rings, temporary tattoos, lip balms, hair extensions, and other accessories.

Pamper your little one by adding on a princess tiara for $14.90, or get the birthday package that comes with a princess tiara, sash, and birthday gift for $39.

Take note that all unused spa products can be brought home.

Your kids will then get to DIY their own chocolate and oat facial mask, before slathering it all over their face. It’s not edible, although kids always ask because it smells so yummy. And it’s not just for vibes – the concoction is also good for their skin. Watch them learn to be independent and apply it on their own, or help and bond over the giggles.

Bath bomb foot spa

With a sparkling welcome drink in hand, they’ll get to enjoy a bath bomb foot spa while the chocolate and oat facial mask soaks in. There are even hand creams available to slather on, and the staff will assist your kids in putting on the temporary tattoos they have chosen.

Mini mani & pedi

Girls will then receive a manicure and pedicure with the 3 nail polish bottles they picked out earlier. Parents will be glad to know that the nail polishes are peelable for a hassle-free removal after the experience.

Not to worry if your kids are the type who can’t sit still – the staff at Pixie Trixie Playhouse also provides colourful pens so they can doodle on paper bags.

Girls can also receive a full princess makeup – colourful eyeshadow, blush, glitter, lip gloss, and shiny gems for a finishing touch. Rest assured that the products used are kid-friendly, gentle on skin, and easy to remove, while makeup applicators are single-use.

Enchanted playground adventure

After the whole pampering spa treatment and makeover, the princesses and knights can head over to the playhouse. A favourite is the ball pit, and there are other fun elements like a slide, as well as a toy supermarket and a car they can drive to play pretend. Do note that socks must be worn at the playhouse.

Prices at Pixie Trixie Playhouse

The full service mentioned above is part of the Ultimate Pixie Spa Experience, which costs $89.

Unfortunately, Pixie Trixie does not offer makeup, manicure and pedicure to boys, so the Boys-Only Fun Spa is more affordable at $49.

If all these are too much for your wallet to handle, you could also opt for just the Mini Mani & Pedi package ($49), which also includes the bath bomb foot spa, or try the Makeup & Hair Styling package ($49). These packages also come with temporary tattoos, spa product shopping, a welcome drink, and complimentary playtime.

There’s also the Enchanted Playground Adventure, which doesn’t include a makeover but grants 2 hours of playtime. It costs $15 on weekdays and $29 on weekends.

All packages allow free admission for 1 adult, and admission for any additional adult costs $10/person.
