UNIQLO x Tamagotchi collab

UNIQLO is wrapping up 2025 with a special collaboration with the childhood favourite Japanese toy, Tamagotchi. They’ll be launching an all-new UT collection – along with some other special treats – in commemoration of Tamagotchi’s 30th anniversary. Here’s everything you need to know about the UNIQLO x Tamagotchi collab.

What is a Tamagotchi?

tamagotchi - old school designsImage adapted from: Brittany Maine & quimby via Flickr

Kids who grew up in the late 90s and early 2000s will know this iconic gadget, but here’s a quick rundown for anyone who missed the wave.

The Tamagotchi is a handheld digital toy first launched in 1996 by Bandai, a renowned toy manufacturer and distributor in Japan. Users are tasked with caring for a virtual pet by feeding it, cleaning up after it, and playing mini-games. What makes it stand out is that there are real consequences. If you don’t look after it properly, your little buddy can kick the bucket, sometimes even from old age.

You’ll easily recognise it by its egg-shaped shell, which comes in a range of designs and colours. And thanks to the renewed love for all things Y2K, the Tamagotchi has found its way back into pop culture.

When will the UNIQLO x Tamagotchi collab launch?

The collaboration will officially launch on 15th December 2025 in Singapore, both online and in stores. So if you’re eyeing this as a Christmas gift, you’ll want to mark your calendar and snag it fast.

What’s included in the UNIQLO x Tamagotchi collab?

UNIQLO x Tamagotchi UT collection

UT collectionImage adapted from: UNIQLO

Those who are familiar with UNIQLO’s UT collection will remember their collaborations with a variety of pop culture icons – their recent THE MONSTERS drop featuring Labubu probably still lives rent-free in your head. This new release is no different, following the same hype-worthy formula by offering Women’s UT T-shirts for $19.90 each, with sizes ranging from XS to 3XL.

There are 4 colours to choose from – black, white, purple, and light grey – and each one incorporates unique Tamagotchi motifs. Among the designs, you’ll be able to spot characters from the game – Ginjirotchi, Kuchipatchi, Mametchi, Mimitchi, and Pochitchi.

The white shirt features the very first Tamagotchi on the front as a fun nod to the toy’s origins, complete with a special appearance by Kuchipatchi on the screen.

The other 3 UTs feature designs on the fronts and backs of the shirt, blending UNIQLO’s classic minimalist style with recognisable icons from the game, like the Tamagotchi egg that your pet hatches from.

UT Original “GEN 1” Tamagotchi

tamagotchi - UT "GEN 1" editionImage adapted from: UNIQLO

The fun doesn’t stop at the T-shirts. UNIQLO has created its own UT Original Tamagotchi ($39.90). The design and packaging pay homage to the first-generation Tamagotchi toys, and it features the original game system released in the West in 1996 – essentially making it a “GEN 1” Tamagotchi. If you’re feeling nostalgic, grab one as a keepsake or use it to accessorise your bag as a charm – just like the kids are doing these days.

UT “Tamago Catch” mini game

While awaiting the release of the collab, try out the special mini game they’ve launched on the UNIQLO x Tamagotchi website, where you’ll also get to browse the upcoming apparel before trying your hand at the “Tamago Catch” game.

It’s really simple – all you have to do is toggle left and right to help Mametchi catch falling items and food. Each item gives you different points, but make sure to avoid the obstacles, or you’ll lose lives. Challenge your friends and see who can last the longest.

Heads up: the game works best on mobile.

Relive your childhood with the UNIQLO x Tamagotchi collab this December

In this digital era, it’s nice to throw it back to the days of quirky gadgets and simple joys. These moments of nostalgia add a little spark to everyday life, so here’s hoping this iconic collab brings a dose of holiday cheer to your festive season.

We’re quick to shout #SupportLocal when it comes to hawker food or home bakers, but when someone suggests shopping from a Singaporean fashion label? Cue the side-eye. But that’s far from the case. These homegrown labels are serving looks that are just as stylish, without the exorbitant shipping fees or long waits.

Best affordable spectacle shops in Singapore

As someone who’s been bespectacled since the age of 10, I’m familiar with the struggles of finding cheap spectacle shops in Singapore. Frames can cost as much as $300, and most of the time, these don’t include lenses.

For those who’re looking for budget-friendly options, check out this spectacle-lar list of glasses shops where you can get affordable and stylish prescription glasses. You can find trendy frames from $12 as well as custom-made prescription glasses in 20 minutes.

How to find the right spectacles for your face shape?

Before we get into our list of the best optical shops in Singapore, let’s first determine what you should consider when looking for a new pair of glasses. Firstly, you’ll want to factor in your face shape and features. There are 6 main types of face shapes: round, oval, heart, square, diamond, and oblong.

You can assess your face type by looking at your jawline length, cheekbones, and width of forehead. Additionally, you’ll also want to check your face angles – are they sharp or soft? Faces with sharper angles can benefit from more rounded spectacle frames while adding edgier frames can bring more balance to faces with softer features.

For instance, people with a round face shape tend to have equal proportions and fuller cheeks, and have jawlines and chins which aren’t very distinctive. As such, they would want to opt for frames that add more structure to their face, such as square or cat-eye glasses.

On the other hand, those blessed with a versatile oval face shape can play around with pretty much any silhouette to match their rounded chin and aptly-sized forehead. These include aviators, rounded frames, as well as rectangular glasses.

Where to find affordable and cheap glasses in Singapore

Now that you know what glasses best suit your face, here’s a round-up of the best optical shops in Singapore to replace your old frames on a budget.

How often should I change my glasses?

Most opticians would recommend switching your glasses every 1-3 years, but overall, it mostly depends on your current state of vision. If you’re feeling any kind of discomfort or any other symptoms, it’s a good sign to change you glasses.

When should I change my glasses?

You should start changing your glasses when you notice signs like blurred vision, eye strain, and frequent headaches. There’s a good chance that your prescription has changed, and your current glasses are no longer giving your eyes the proper support.

8 CNY Outfit Dos & Don’ts For 2025 To Bai Nian In Comfort & Look Good In OOTDs https://thesmartlocal.com/read/cny-outfit-tips/ Sat, 18 Jan 2025 01:00:06 +0000 https://thesmartlocal.com/?p=224032 It's time to leave the all-red outfits in your closet and try out different styles this year.

Chinese New Year outfit dos & don’ts

Chinese New Year is a time for many things: spring cleaning your home; visiting beloved relatives; and showing off your fashion choices. After all, it has been inculcated since we were young that we had to dress to the nines as it symbolises a fresh start in the new year.

And just because you want to look good for your Chu Yi OOTDs, it doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your comfort. Here are some dos and don’ts to follow for your Chinese New Year outfit to ensure you’re comfy and looking like a thousand-dollar red packet.

*The promotions featured in this article may no longer be available.

– Dos –

1. Carry a bag with enough space to keep all your angbaos

shein bags
You might even be able to sneak some CNY goodies into this ruched bag ($6.75) or baguette bag ($11.50)
Image adapted from: SHEIN & SHEIN

It’s always funny to see how most of our aunties carry bags that are like Doraemon’s magic belly, with a seemingly infinite supply of red packets to give out. That said, a roomy bag is one of the most handy accessories to bring for CNY visits, so you can easily store your angbaos.

If carrying a large bag isn’t your style, going with a mid-sized purse will also work well compared to a tiny clutch. Plus, you know you’ll have enough space to store all your other accessories from portable chargers to hand sanitisers and even an extra face mask, just in case.

2. Dress up with the heat in mind so you don’t end up sweaty

This cami dress ($25) and floral dress ($22) are breathable and perfect for a day of visitations.

That outfit you had in mind looks great – until you start sweating. Singapore’s humidity is not to be trifled with, and if you want to look your best from dusk till dawn, you’d be better off dressing with the heat in mind

From wearing lightweight and breathable materials like cotton and linen to opting for flowy cuts and silhouettes like an open-back cami dress, you can look good and literally feel good.

Gents can also go for a mandarin collared shirt rather than traditional collared shirts for a more minimalistic but stylish approach.

3. Wear a pair of comfy shoes to walk from house-to-house

mules and loafers from shein cny outfits
These chunky-heeled mules ($25) and flat loafers ($26.25) will give your feet the support it needs

Here’s a hot take: you don’t need to wear heels to go bai nian. Seriously, unless you’re wearing your shoes into your relatives’ homes, leave the stilettos at home and wear something more comfortable for your feet like mules or flat loafers instead. You’re spending the majority of your time chatting with your family and friends indoors anyway.

The trick to comfortable footwear is picking out something that has cushion and support. If your bag is big enough, you can also compromise by bringing along a pair of those stilettos you want to debut on the ‘gram – just for the OOTD.

4. Go bold with a plain-coloured top

plain-coloured top from shein

Sometimes a little juxtaposition works like when you pair a plain top with some coloured bottoms. No, that doesn’t mean putting on a white t-shirt and calling it a day. This is an opportunity to get creative with different types of cuts.

This bustier crop top ($16) is an example of how you can make a statement even in plain white for CNY. Throw on some pants in a warm tone and you’ve got yourself a snazzy outfit.

– Don’ts –

1. Avoid dressing head-to-toe in red like a cartoon character

dressing in all red for cny outfits

It might have looked cute when you were 10, but if you have any autonomy over your CNY fashion choices, please don’t step out of the house in an all-red outfit. Although it checks off all the auspicious boxes, you might resemble a bright festive lantern.

So do yourself a favour and expand the colours in your wardrobe to some yellow, orange, and pink. Your IG feed will thank you for that.

2. Don’t give your relatives a heart attack with a super-high dress hem

low-wrap hem
This low-wrap-hem dress ($25) also has an underslip for added protection

News flash – you’re not going to the club, so you can keep that mini dress safe in your drawer for now, lest you give your grandmother a heart attack. We don’t want to dictate how you dress, but this is Chinese New Year where you’ll be on the move quite a fair bit, so ensuring you’re in a comfortable outfit will help you last the whole day.

If your family is all about showing off a little skin, then all the power to you. Although we’d hazard a guess and say most Singaporean families lean a little more towards the conservative side.

3. Keep the black coloured & “ripped” clothes in the closet

black clothes

It doesn’t need to be said but black is one of the most inauspicious colours and is often associated with death. To draw in all the good vibes and lucky energies, your outfit should sport some CNY-themed colours instead like red, orange, and yellow; leave your black clothes in the shadows of your closet where they belong for now.

While you’re at it, don’t pick up that pair of ripped jeans too. As new as it might be, having holes and the “damaged” aesthetic is counter to the New Year hype with having new threads on your back; some superstitious folk also believe it to attract bad luck. You have 364 other days in a year to wear them, so worry not.

4. Wear a mask that doesn’t clash with your outfit

blue mask during chinese new year
A blue surgical mask clashes with the warm tones of CNY colours

This is the second year running where we have to doll up with another accessory in tow – face masks. Thankfully there’s no shortage of fashionable masks to keep you protected from that one relative who can’t stop coughing.

If you would rather stay on top of your hygiene game and wear a surgical mask, we suggest picking one in a colour that matches your outfit. Masks don’t have to be your typical shade of hospital blue – white surgical masks are always a safe bet when it comes to pairing it with an outfit of any style.

Check out our guide to stylish CNY-themed masks here.

The small Starbucks Pufflet Sling bags can be yours for $29.90. Choose between the subtle pastel colours of purple and pink. At 27cm in length and 17.5cm in height, the bag is a pretty decent size to hold all your daily essentials, including a mini umbrella and water bottle.

For $36.90, you can get your hands on the large Starbucks Pufflet Sling bags, which come in black or dusty green. These are 31cm in length and 23cm in height, so the bag can easily fit a 13-inch laptop or tablet.

Omega x Swatch alternatives

You’ve probably read about the Omega x Swatch debacle, which has made headlines yet again. Snaking queues, scalpers tripling prices online, and everything else in between, the launch of the new Snoopy collab has many wondering if it is worth dropping more than $400 for a watch.

If you’re not up for the hype but are inspired to throw down some cash for a “real” wrist watch, you’ll be glad to know that there are plenty of alternatives available. Here are 5 MoonSwatch alternatives that you can consider at a relatively low price point. And yes, you won’t have to queue for 2 days to get your hands on one.

But first, what’s up with the Omega x Swatch MoonSwatch hype?

omega moonswatch alternatives - moonswatch

Before we jump into our picks, we have to talk about what makes the MoonSwatch flavour of the month. For starters, the MoonSwatch retails for $430, which is extremely low compared to the usual retail price of Omega watches, which go for upwards of $10,000. For reference, the Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional that the MoonSwatch is based on retails for around $11,200.

Because it’s also a collab, many might think the watch is more valuable and rare than it actually is. Nevermind that Swatch came out to clarify that the MoonSwatch was not a limited edition. And fun fact, Omega is owned by the Swatch Group, so the collab isn’t really “shocking” per se.

The OG Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional.

The MoonSwatch’s design is based largely off the design of the original Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional – incorporating similar features such as its chronograph dial as well as bezel.

However, that’s just about all that’s similar between the two. Unlike the OG Moonwatch, the MoonSwatch’s strap is a velcro one, its casing is made of Swatch’s Bioceramic material, and it’s also run on a quartz movement, which is a cheem horology term to mean that it runs on a battery.

Just a couple of days later, those who did manage to snag a MoonSwatch provided their honest feedback on the watch; that the MoonSwatch doesn’t match up to the OG Moonwatch.

Nevertheless, here are 5 quality alternatives that you can purchase:

1. Orient Bambino Classic Automatic Mesh Watch ($298)

omega moonswatch alternatives - Orient Bambino Classic Automatic Mesh Watch
Orient has been around since 1950

First on our list is the Bambino Classic, from Japanese watchmakers Orient. It retails at a very affordable $298 – a steal, considering it runs on an automatic movement, meaning that it self-winds when worn and doesn’t rely on a battery.

Because of its affordability, it wouldn’t be considered a luxury timepiece. However, don’t let that turn you off – it’s a watch that can definitely hold its own when compared with some of the more expensive offerings in the market. There are also many variations available, like how you can choose between a metal mesh bracelet or a leather strap.

On top of that, it’s extremely slim at just 12mm in a stainless steel case, and paired with an elegant dial that comes in a variety of colourways. This would make a perfect dress watch to pair with your business casual fits.

Model name: Orient Bambino Classic RA-AC0020G10B RA-AC0020G
Price: $298

Get the Orient Bambino Classic.

2. Fossil Dayliner Three-Hand Teak Leather ($199.20)

Many of us would be familiar with the Fossil brand for their leather goods, but dapper folks might also be glad to know they also have aesthetic watches that give off vintage vibes.

Priced well below $300 is the clean and classic Dayliner Three-Hand Teak Leather series, which comes in various coloured dials such as blue and black. It even comes with a green dial, which is reminiscent of the green-dial Rolex watch worn by tennis legend Roger Federer at Wimbledon.

Another interesting thing about the Dayliner is its case size, which stands at 42mm and is perfect for those with larger wrists who may find it difficult to get larger-sized luxury watches. It’s also encased in stainless steel, and boasts a water resistance of up to 5 ATM. And yes, the strap is leather, paying homage to what Fossil is best known for.

Model name: Fossil Dayliner Three-Hand Teak Leather
Price: $199.20, U.P $249

Get the Fossil Dayliner Three-Hand Leather.

3. Q Timex 38mm Synthetic Rubber Strap Watch ($270.30)

If you’re all about sporting a watch that looks “branded”, it’s time to turn your attention to Dutch timepiece band Timex. Right off the bat, the Q Timex resembles the Rolex GMT Master II “Pepsi”, with its blue and red bezel.

This sporty watch runs on a quartz movement, is water resistant up to 50m, and has a handy day and date display on the dial. The strap also comes in two variations: one made of synthetic rubber – a common feat in most sports watches, and a slightly pricier variation with a stainless steel band.

Overall, this entry-level watch is perfect for those who would want to get their first “real” timepiece without having to break the bank.

Model name: Q Timex
Price: $270.30, U.P $318

4. Citizen Promaster Nighthawk ($539)

omega moonswatch alternatives - Citizen Promaster Nighthawk

If you are a fan of watches that can be worn for both formal events as well as the outdoors, you can consider Citizen’s Promaster Nighthawk.

The overall look and feel of the watch gives off a rugged, outdoorsy vibe, and its features certainly back that up. Adorned by many lines to fulfil a variety of functions like a stopwatch, dual-time zones and also simple calculations, its dial is certainly a busy one, which some might prefer.

Inspired by the military, the Promaster Nighthawk comes in an olive green leather strap that is reminiscent of army uniforms; if that’s not your thing, there are variations in blue or black as well. The crystal is also impact and shatter resistant so it’s pretty hardy.

Probably what distinguishes the Promaster Nighthawk from most other watches is its unique power source. Batteries? No no. The watch is powered by any light source, making it a somewhat  environmentally sustainable option.

Model name: Citizen Promaster Nighthawk
Price: $539, U.P $711.55

Get the Citizen Promaster Nighthawk.

5. Tissot Chrono XL Classic ($575)

omega moonswatch alternatives - Tissot Chrono XL Classic
In case you didn’t already know, Tissot is considered a Swiss luxury watch brand.

One of the distinguishing features of the MoonSwatch is that it’s a chronograph, meaning that its face would have typically 2-3 smaller dials to denote either hours, minutes or seconds to facilitate its stopwatch function.

Our pick for a chronograph alternative to the MoonSwatch would be Tissot’s Chrono XL Classic. Another fun fact: Tissot belongs to the Swatch Group parent organisation… which kind of makes it the cousin to Omega?

The watch retails for around $540, which is considered a decent price given its Swiss roots and how you’re essentially paying for the technology that goes behind the watch.

Unlike the MoonSwatch’s case – which is visibly made of plastic – the Tissot Chrono XL is encased in stainless steel, giving it a more formal look. It comes in a larger 45mm dial, complete with a sapphire crystal, which is known for its anti-scratch prowess and so used in fine timepieces.

Model name: Tissot Chrono XL
Price: $575

Get the Tissot Chrono XL.

Bonus: The Holy Grail Watch to invest in

Now, if you’re really serious about investing in watches that will hold or appreciate in value, watches like the MoonSwatch won’t exactly cut it, given that they’re made en masse.

omega moonswatch alternatives - high end luxury watches
Vacheron Constantin, Patek Philippe, and Audemars Piguet.

What you’ll want to look out for are high-end luxury timepiece brands like Rolex, Audemars Piguet, and Richard Mille. What separates them from the market is how each watch is handcrafted, meaning that there’s a limited number of pieces available each year. This drives up its exclusivity factor, and naturally, its resale price.

If all this has got you excited and you have some real deep pockets, there are many luxury timepieces you can consider.

For example, you can get the Patek Philippe Nautilus or the Rolex Daytona. The former is highly sought after by collectors because it has since been discontinued, which has caused its price to appreciate significantly. It retailed for around $30,000-$40,000 back in 2016, and right now, some models command as much as $700,00 on the resale market.

omega moonswatch alternatives - Rolex GMT-Master II

A slightly less pricey alternative would be the Rolex GMT-Master II in Black/Blue. Colloquially known as the “Batman” or “Batgirl” depending on the bracelet, it retails for around $15,700 and its price in the resale market is around upwards of $22,000.

Now, whether or not you can actually get a piece at retail is a whole other issue. With demand at an all-time high, it’s virtually impossible to walk into any Rolex store to get a model. But hey, we can dream, can’t we?

In the meantime, be sure to do your due diligence before embarking on watch investment – researching on factors like its exclusivity, demand in the market and also for any limited edition models.

Alternative watches to the Omega x Swatch MoonSwatch

With luxury watches being an investment asset, many would’ve believed the MoonSwatch would be worth more in the future. However, it’s unlikely, given the fact that it’s neither limited edition nor numbered, and it’s mass-produced – unless, of course, scalpers on Carousell manage to sell it for marked-up hype prices.

Even if you didn’t manage to get a MoonSwatch, rest assured that it’ll be in stock soon, and you just might be able to get a pair assuming there won’t be long lines forming again.

However, if you’re in the market for a great timepiece and don’t want to be part of the frenzy, these picks are great “first watches” to get started on your watch journey. Not every watch has to have “hype” or even appreciate in value; what’s most important is that you enjoy the watch you wear, and that is worth much more than any watch you buy just not to feel FOMO.
