Useful Singapore maps

We’ve all been in this situation at least once: you’re outside when nature calls, but there’s no mall nearby and no MRT toilet in sight. But before you start hyperventilating, know that there’s a map that pinpoints the nearest loos, as well as another map for locating toilets with bidets. And that’s not all, there are even maps for finding water coolers, community cats, and work-friendly cafes.

We’ve compiled a list of useful maps of Singapore you might never have heard of, but will definitely come in handy.

1. Singapore Water Dispenser Map

Where to find water coolers

With drinks getting pricier by the day – and even bottled water now coming with the added hassle of the Beverage Container Return Scheme – staying hydrated while out and about can feel unnecessarily expensive. Some days, it is just too hot out not to have a drink, but what if you could quench your thirst for free?

The Singapore Water Dispenser Map was started by Ming Kang, an avid hiker and jogger, who wanted to save money from buying bottled water while out. It comprises over 100 known water dispenser locations across Singapore. Details include photos of the water dispensers, the temperature of the water, and even the longitude and latitude to help you find the exact location to get a drink or refill your bottle.

You can also contribute to this ever-growing list of water dispensers by submitting a Google Form. Each submission is vetted by Ming Kang before it’s plotted onto the Maps, so you won’t have to worry about showing up to a phantom water cooler.

Locate your nearest water dispenser.

2. Work-friendly cafes in SG

With strong WiFi & power plugs

For your WFH days or for students looking for a study spot before the next exam, this map might just be what you need. Compiled by a local blogger, the work-friendly cafes in SG map features spots around central Singapore that are actually suitable for getting stuff done.

Each cafe listed has been personally vetted by the blogger and only makes the cut if it ticks all the right boxes: good vibes, strong WiFi, decent coffee, and the availability of power plugs.

3. Toilets with Bidet Singapore

Finding a toilet with a bidet in Singapore can feel like striking gold, but this map by Toilets with Bidet Singapore makes the hunt a lot easier. It has documented over 200 locations in Singapore where you can find exactly that, which is a game-changer for those who refuse to settle for less.

Although the map does not include specific locations of the toilets, it does include floor information where applicable. So if you’re picky about how you handle your business, save this map to know exactly which toilet spot has a bidet.

Toilets with Bidet Singapore might not be the hero we deserve, but most certainly is the hero we need. Since the map was published in December 2025, it has garnered over 4 million views, proving just how desperate Singaporeans can be when it comes to finding a quality throne.

Find your nearest toilet with bidets.

4. Sgtoilets

Public toilets & water fountains

If you’re not fussed about bidets and just need a toilet, stat, this map by Sgtoilets has you covered with over 400 public toilets across the island.

You can toggle the map to showcase all known public toilets within your vicinity. However, the map does not display the name or the building of the toilet, only the pin on the map – so you’d have to do a bit of sleuthing to figure out exactly where it is.

Find your nearest public toilet.

5. SG Nursing Rooms

Includes amenities available

Parents with newborns, this one is for you. When your young one is feeling peckish outside, the last thing you’d want to deal with is scrambling to locate a nursing room. Thankfully, there is a list of public nursing rooms in malls around Singapore to help you quickly find the nearest one.

Screenshot from: SG Nursing Rooms

The list even includes the amenities available in each nursing room, such as seats, basins, and water dispensers. There’s also a cleanliness and upkeep rating for each nursing room to help you avoid any less-than-ideal spots while you’re out.

You can also submit recommendations for nursing room updates or cleanliness ratings through their feedback form.

Locate public nursing rooms.

6. Cats of SG

Contribute to the care of community cats

Now, this map by Cats of SG is a fun one for feline lovers. It features community cats from around the island, with little tidbits about each one so you can get to know them better. Only the general area and not the exact locations of the cats are revealed to prevent misuse of the map.

If you’ve been spotting a neighbourhood cat and wish to feed it, you can try your luck at finding them on the map to learn more about their feeding preferences.

Contributions to the map are also welcome, with submissions vetted by the team before being plotted onto the map.

Scentphony – perfume vending machine

Picture this: it’s your lunch break, and you’ve finally reached the mall after walking forever under the sun. You’re sweating all over, and to make things worse, you’ve left your scented body wipes back at the office.

If you’re desperately in need of smelling fresh ASAP, make a beeline for Scentphony, a perfume vending machine that’ll sort you out with a spritz of fragrance in seconds.

What is Scentphony?

Scentphony machine
Image adapted from: Scentphony, @thesmartlocalsg via Instagram

You may have seen your fair share of unique vending machines, but this might just be one of the most unexpected. Instead of dispensing snacks or drinks, Scentphony is a perfume vending machine that gives you 2 spritzes of perfume. And the best part? It’ll only set you back $1.

Scentphony scents
Image adapted from: Jo Malone London, Neiman Marcus

Each machine stocks 5 different scents from various luxury brands, but the lineup gets refreshed occasionally. Right now, you can get a spritz of English Pear & Freesia Cologne by Jo Malone London, Burlington 1819 by Roja, Sauvage by Dior, Wulóng Chá by Nishane, and Replica From The Garden by Maison Margiela.

How to use Scentphony?

First, pick your poison by choosing your desired scent from the touch screen, then pay $1 for 2 spritzes. Don’t worry if you’ve forgotten your wallet – the machine also accepts cashless payment, including Google Pay and Apple Pay.

When your payment is complete, the button corresponding to your chosen fragrance will light up. Then comes the fun part – line up your neck or wrist with the nozzle above the button, and it’ll spray the perfume once you press it.

Pro tip: You’ve paid for 2 spritzes, so don’t forget to press again for your second one. Oh, and keep your eyes or face away from the nozzle – the machine will remind you too, but better safe than sorry.

Where can I find Scentphony?

You can currently find Scentphony at 3 malls islandwide, with their most central location being at Marina Square. Easties can find the machine at Downtown East, while Westies can head to Bukit Panjang Plaza.

Find the vending machine near the coach bay at Downtown East and near the money changer at Bukit Panjang Plaza – both located on Level 1. If you’re at Marina Square, you’ll have to head up to Level 2 – it’s right next to the food court, so you can easily get a spritz right before you head back to the office after a meal.

These nifty vending machines will help you stay fresh all day long

Be a considerate public transport passenger who freshens up after a gym sesh before heading home, or impress your date by greeting them with a nice scent – when you need a quick spritz, give Scentphony’s perfume vending machines a try.

8 Ways To Get Free Or Cheap Groceries In Singapore, From Community Fridges To Sharing Apps https://thesmartlocal.com/read/free-cheap-groceries-singapore/ Thu, 16 Apr 2026 08:00:02 +0000 https://thesmartlocal.com/?p=374188 NTUC who?

Free or cheap groceries in Singapore

Food waste is a growing issue in Singapore, making up about 12% of our total waste in 2024. At the same time, prices at grocery stores keep climbing, and eating healthy food is starting to feel like a luxury – after all, there’s only so much caifan one can eat.

So if you’re trying to stretch your dollar and save the planet, here are ways to get free or cheap rescued groceries in Singapore, from community fridges and food rescue initiatives to handy apps that’ll help you cut waste and cost.

What is rescued food?

Rescued foodImage credit: Fridge Restock Community SG via Facebook

“Rescued food” is exactly what it sounds like: edible food that would’ve otherwise gone to waste. Items include surplus stock, slightly bruised fruits, snacks nearing their expiry date, or simply produce that does not fit supermarket beauty standards.

Instead of going to waste, they’re collected and redistributed – sometimes sold at low prices, other times given away for free. They may not look picture-perfect, but they taste the same.

–  Free groceries in Singapore –

We’ve included options that are open to all, but just note that some other food banks and organisation-led initiatives out there may only be available to eligible individuals. Always double-check before heading down.

1. Olio

Freecycling app for unused food & other items

Olio

Olio (App Store | Google Play) is one of the most widely used freecycling platforms in Singapore; think of it as a free, community-based version of Carousell where users give away things they don’t need, and take up what they do need. It’s often used to distribute surplus food, and you can filter listings by proximity, request certain items, or even lend things out to others in the neighbourhood.

Food Waste HeroesImage credit: foodpanda

Olio has even teamed up with pandamart to redistribute rescued groceries through volunteers known as “Food Waste Heroes”. Sign up to become a volunteer, and you’ll be tasked to help collect goods from stores and upload them to the app for others to claim. There are no in-app payments involved for users – just pick up whatever items you need directly from fellow users.

2. Community fridges

Neighbourhood pantries

Community fridge

There are quite a number of community fridges in Singapore, and they operate on a simple concept: take what you need, give what you can. These fridges are set up by different neighbourhoods and initiatives, and are usually stocked with donated or rescued food from suppliers such as Fridge Restock SG and Fairprice Food Share.

Since each fridge is managed differently, check with the respective organisation, community club or residents’ network for eligibility details. Most, however, operate on a first-come, first-served basis and are open to all residents. Here are some free-for-all community fridges across Singapore:

Name Location Details
Bishan East Zone 1 Community Fridge Blk 112 Bishan Street 12 Open 24/7

Offers fresh vegetables

Community Fridge Blk 162 Yishun Street 11 Open 24/7

Offers halal-friendly produce

Food Rescue Community Fridges Hardcourt at Blk 9 Toh Yi Drive Open 24/7

Set up an account to take up to 5 items per month

Bedok Sunflower Community Fridge Blk 33 Bedok South Avenue 2 Open every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month, 3pm to 4pm

Residents can redeem up to 2 bags worth of fruits and vegetables

Offers halal food items

My Kind of Fridge Blk 441 Tampines Street 43 Open 24/7

Offers halal food items

The Healthy Indulgence Programme (HIP) Fridge Blk 616 Punggol Drive Opening hours vary

Offers fresh fruits and vegetables, with a kopi and donation corner

The Magic Fridge Blk 5 Telok Blangah Crescent Opening hours vary

Offers fresh fruits and vegetables

To find community fridges near you, check Green Guide or Fridge Restock SG’s location directories. A kind member of the ‘We love rescued food’ Facebook group has also created a Google My Maps map in case you’d like to check if there’s a community fridge near you.

3. Fridge Restock Community SG

Distributes to 40 places across Singapore

Fridge Restock Community SGImage credit: Fridge Restock Community SG via Facebook

Here’s one of the big players in Singapore’s food rescue scene: the Fridge Restock Community (FRC). This non-profit collects unsold produce and groceries through 2 to 3 rescue missions a week. The volunteers at FRC then distribute more than 9,000kg of rescued food to 40 community fridges and distribution points across the island.

Follow FRC on Facebook to see when the next distributions will take place, and maybe even sign up to help out. Check out the full list of distribution points.

4. Food Rescue Sengkang

Islandwide food rescue network

“Feed the people, not the bins.” That’s the tagline of Food Rescue Sengkang (FRSK), a group of volunteers that’s been sharing surplus groceries to communities since 2019.

Their main hubs are based in Fernvale Link and Thanggam Hub, but the network also supports satellite points in neighbourhoods like Marymount, Sembawang, Ang Mo Kio, Toa Payoh, and Yishun. The main hubs host ticketed events which cost either $2 or $5/pax, while the satellite points run weekly or fortnightly distributions depending on supply and manpower, and those are free for all.

Check FRSK’s Telegram channel for the latest news on their rescues.

5. Bishan Community Club Food Distribution

Monthly food distribution events with free haircuts

Bishan Community Club Food DistributionImage credit: Bishan Community Club via Facebook

Bishan Community Club Food Distribution holds a large-scale event once every month from 4pm to 5pm. In collaboration with Ascending Hope Community Services, a non-profit organisation in Singapore, many of their 2026 events have included free haircuts too.

Upcoming distributions are on 22nd April and 24th June 2026, both with on-site haircuts. Expect fresh produce and pantry staples, and check out the schedule on Bishan CC’s Facebook page.

Come 25th July 2026, Bishan CC will also be hosting the 7th Project Zero Marketplace. From 9.30am-2.30pm at the multi-purpose hall, vendors will be selling goods and produce that have short shelf lives or are aesthetically unappealing at discounted prices.

–  Cheap groceries in Singapore –

And if you’d like quality groceries at drastically reduced prices, these 3 places and apps have a lot to offer. By rescuing surplus and near-expiry foods, they ensure that nothing goes to waste and pass the savings on to you in the process.

6. MoNo Foods

Pay for a box & fill it with any items you want

MoNo FoodsImage adapted from @mono.foods via Instagram

Tucked inside Tekka Place, MoNo Foods sells surplus packaged goods that are close to expiry or past their best-before date, such as organic snacks, plant–based milks, and imported sauces that are still safe to consume.

The pricing system is simple: pick an empty box and fill it with as many items as you can fit. Simply pay for the price of the box – depending on the size, it can cost anywhere from $12 to $34, which is quite a steal. You can also opt for a $30 or $50 mystery box, packed with 20 to 35 surprise items, respectively, delivered straight to your door.

The inventory changes weekly depending on donations, so do check for updates from the MoNo Foods Telegram channel or Instagram page. You might just score premium finds like Lurpak butter, truffle sauces, or collagen drinks. Bring your own bag, and don’t be surprised if you receive some freebies too.

7. Treatsure

Surplus groceries & baked goods delivered to your door

Treatsure

The Treatsure app (App Store | Google Play) is one of the most convenient ways to get rescued groceries. Launched in 2017, it connects users to unsellable food from hotels, buffets, and grocers. Here’s how it works: you browse the app for the available listings, add items to your cart, then opt for delivery for a $7 fee or pick-up at their concept store in Tanjong Pagar Plaza.

The items might be surplus, imperfect in appearance, or nearing their best-before date, but still perfectly edible; the best part is, groceries listed on their platform are sold with discounts of up to 80%. There’s even a category reserved for yummy bakes.

8. UglyFood

Online grocer with discounted produce

UglyFoodScreenshot from: UglyFood

Another online option is e-grocer UglyFood, which focuses on selling mostly surplus and ugly produce. Shop mangoes, broccoli, and even Shine Muscat grapes at big discounts.

All items are quality-checked to be in good condition, and all spoiled produce will be refunded. You can either pick up your groceries at their outlet at Paragon Shopping Centre or have it delivered for free with a minimum spend of $45, or $3 for orders under $45. Keep up to date on weekly flash sales and bundles on the UglyFood Telegram channel.

The produce may or may not look quirky, but they’re as good as anything you’d find at your local Fairprice.

–  Bonus –

Food banks

Shop-for-free

Food from the HeartImage credit: Food from the Heart (Singapore) via Facebook

For those who need additional support, Singapore also has several food banks providing groceries and essentials to households that qualify for aid.

Food from the Heart and The Food Bank Singapore are 2 of the biggest names. They run community shops and distribution programmes where beneficiaries can pick and choose what they need instead of receiving pre-packed boxes of food.

Applications are typically handled through social service agencies or community partners, so if you or someone you know needs assistance, do reach out.

FairPrice Food Share

Over 60 distribution points for beneficiaries

Every week, Fairprice Food Share restocks its 60 community distribution points with imperfect fruits and vegetables rescued from nearby Fairprice outlets. These distribution points are aimed at eligible beneficiaries such as seniors and low-income families, with over 25,000 beneficiaries fed in less than a year. Check your nearest distribution point.

Bonus: JB

17. Fuel up on your way back from JB

Causeway checkpoint
Image credit: Immigration & Checkpoints Authority via Facebook

If you happen to be driving to JB for a day trip, take the chance to fill up your tank before you head back to Singapore.

To get a better idea of the price difference between Singapore and Malaysia, here’s a price comparison of similar fuels that you can get in both countries:

Gas station Fuel type Country Listed pump price
Caltex Platinum 98 with Techron® Singapore $4.16
Premium 97 with Techron® Malaysia RM5.35 (~S$1.73)
Caltex Diesel with Techron® D Singapore $4.68
Caltex Diesel (Bio) with Techron® D Malaysia RM6.92 (~S$2.23)
Shell Shell V-Power Singapore $4.23
Shell V-Power 97 Malaysia RM5.35 (~S$1.73)

Just remember that it’s illegal for foreigners to pump the subsidised RON95 petrol, so make sure you’re pumping RON97 when you fill up at our neighbours’. Also, don’t empty your tank in Singapore just so you can get more fuel in – you still need to have 3/4 of your tank filled up when you cross the checkpoint.

Save on fuel costs with these petrol station discounts & promotions

Fuel prices don’t seem like they’ll drop any time soon, and for many of us, that just means thinking twice before every drive. But when you really need to get behind the wheel, these petrol station deals and promotions can help take a bit of the sting out of each top-up.

WhatsApp hacks & features

With WhatsApp being one of the most widely used messaging apps among Singaporeans, chances are you’re already familiar with the usual tricks – pinning, editing, and deleting messages, hiding your “seen” status, and joining useful WhatsApp channels.

But the app is constantly updating, and there are now many new and lesser-known WhatsApp hacks and features you might not have tried yet.

1. Parent-managed accounts

Review message requests & manage privacy settings

WhatsApp hacks & features - Parent-managed accounts
Image adapted from: WhatsApp

You may have reluctantly handed your kid a phone so you can stay in touch after school hours, but you’re also worried about who else might be messaging them. If this sounds like you, you’ll probably find the new parent-managed account for children under 13 useful – this feature will be rolled out gradually in the following months.

It allows you to control who gets to contact your kid, choose the groups they can join, review message requests from unknown numbers, and manage their privacy settings. These controls are also protected by a PIN on the parent’s phone, so your child won’t be able to mess with the settings.

Here’s how to create a parent-managed account:

  1. Download WhatsApp on your child’s device, select a language, select “More options”, then “Create a parent-managed account”.
  2. From your phone, scan the QR code displayed on your child’s device.

Find out more about how to set up a parent-managed account on WhatsApp.

2. Format text

Bold, italicise, strikethrough, monospace & more

WhatsApp hacks & features - Format text
Image adapted from: Ong Rui En

Formatting text on WhatsApp isn’t exactly new, but you might not be using all the options available. If you’re an iOS user, you can select the text you want to format, then tap on “format”, before picking either “bold”, “italic”, “strikethrough”, or “monospace”.

For Android users or for the slightly more manual way, add these symbols before and after your text:

  • An asterisk (*) for bold.
  • An underscore (_) for italic.
  • A tilde (~) for strikethrough.
  • 3 backticks (“`) for monospace.
  • 1 backtick (`) for inline code.

For these 5 formats above, make sure not to leave a space between the text and the symbols.

Here’s another hack: Use a hyphen (-) and hit space before the text to create bulleted lists, or the number 1 followed by a period (.) and a space to start a numbered list.

Inputting the greater-than (>) sign followed by a space will turn your text into a block quote.

3. Turn off notifications for emoji reactions

Reduce notification spam

It feels like the “react with an emoji” function was only recently introduced, but now, it seems like almost every other message comes with an emoji reaction attached. If the notification spam from emoji reactions is getting on your nerves, there’s a way to turn them off.

Go to your WhatsApp Settings and tap on “Notifications”. Here, you can toggle on and off notifications for emoji reactions – choose to do so for private messages, group messages, and statuses.

4. Share your live location

Locate your friends & family easily

WhatsApp hacks & features - Live location (1)

No more playing hide-and-seek with your friends when meeting up. WhatsApp’s live location function updates as you move, so your recipient can track your location in real time.

WhatsApp hacks & features - Live location (2)

Here’s how to share your location:

  1. Make sure to allow WhatsApp to access your location through your phone’s location settings first.
  2. In your chat with whoever you want to share your location with, tap on “+” > Location > Share live location.
  3. Choose the duration that you want to share your location for, with options ranging from 15 minutes to 1 hour and 8 hours, then hit send.

With this feature, “Where are you?” spam texts from your parents might even become a thing of the past.

5. Make stickers with your photos, emoji combinations & AI

Create custom stickers on the spot

WhatsApp hacks & features - Genmoji vs Meta AI stickers
Genmoji (left) and Meta AI stickers (right) generating stickers for “Person holding two hearts”.
Image adapted from: Ong Rui En

Sometimes, we just can’t find the right sticker to express ourselves. This is when WhatsApp’s in-app sticker creation features might prove useful. For quick sticker reactions, you can use AI functions like Genmoji or Meta AI stickers. Find Genmoji on your emoji keyboard, or tap on the stickers icon, tap on “create”, then “use AI” for Meta AI stickers.

WhatsApp hacks & features - Custom emoji stickers
Image adapted from: Ong Rui En

For more personalised, quirky stickers, there’s also the option to slap together a few emojis and send them as stickers. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Drag the main emoji that you’ll be using up and release it outside of the keyboard when the green “+” appears.
  2. Tap on “edit sticker”.
  3. Tap on the sticker icon at the top right corner of your screen to add more emojis and stickers to the current emoji. You can also add text and draw on your sticker.

WhatsApp hacks & features - Video sticker
Turning a video into a sticker.

If your friends have always turned you into meme stickers, now’s the time to take revenge.

Tap on the stickers icon, then tap on “create” and select the photo or video you want to turn into a sticker. The subject of the image will automatically be cropped out into a sticker. If you have selected a video, you can trim it to the length you want and fit it into a square to send as a moving sticker.

6. Turn on advanced chat privacy

Prevent sensitive info from accidentally getting leaked

WhatsApp hacks & features - Advanced chat privacy
Image adapted from: Ong Rui En

People already know about disappearing messages and locking chats, but not many know that you can turn on advanced chat privacy too.

For instance, you’re sharing screenshots of your passwords with your parents on WhatsApp, but you know they’ll be saved to their photo gallery by default. Turning on advanced chat privacy means that media you send won’t be saved to the recipient’s gallery automatically, and they won’t be able to use Meta AI in the chat or export the whole chat.

Here’s how:

  1.  In your chat with the recipient, tap on the top bar where the contact name is.
  2. Scroll down and tap on “Advanced chat privacy”.
  3. Toggle it on.

However, they will still be able to forward your messages or take screenshots of the chat. This function is not an all-encompassing privacy guarantee, but it can be useful if you frequently share sensitive information in your chats with the recipient.

7. Send video notes

Also known as “Telebubbles” on Telegram

WhatsApp hacks & features - Video notes
Image adapted from: Ong Rui En

Video messages have been around since 2017 on the messaging platform Telegram, but it was only in 2023 that WhatsApp rolled out video notes, a similar circular video message bubble. It’s a quick and convenient way to send visual updates of what you’re doing to your besties and significant other.

To send a video message, just tap and hold on to the camera icon in your chat and release to send once you are done recording. If you’re not happy with your recording, slide your finger to the left to cancel.

A nifty trick is to use the lock mode when recording your video message. Just click and hold on the camera icon, then swipe up to lock – this will keep the video recording, while freeing up your hand and allowing you to switch to the back camera.

8. Transcribe voice messages

Avoid being a public nuisance

WhatsApp hacks & features - Transcribe voice messages
Image adapted from: Ong Rui En

Don’t be like those aunties and uncles on the MRT who play their TikTok videos and voice messages out loud. If you’re out in public or don’t want to listen to a 10-minute-long voice message, simply press and hold the voice message, then tap “transcribe”.

This handy voice message transcribing feature means you no longer need to scramble for your earpiece or squeeze the phone speaker against your ear to catch a voice note in public.

To tweak these settings permanently, tap on the “You” icon in the bottom right corner of your screen. Then, tap on “chats” followed by “voice message transcripts”. Here, you’ll be able to choose if you want future voice messages to be transcribed automatically.

WhatsApp features & hacks you probably didn’t know about

Now that you know there’s a whole bunch of tricks behind this green icon, you might as well put them to good use. Time to show off your new knowledge to friends and family, and maybe you’ll just start a new group chat era where you’re the designated tech support, whether you like it or not.

How to get cheaper medication & supplements in SG

Not every sniffle, rash, or mild cough needs a trip to the GP or polyclinic. Sometimes the cure is just lots of rest and common medication. With lives getting busier and cost of living creeping up, more people are brainstorming ways they can save money. And thankfully, light medication are one of the areas you can cut costs on.

We’ve curated some super smart hacks on how you can get cheaper medication and supplements in Singapore. And of course, they’re all safe and legit.

1. Compare prices across pharmacies, online vs retail

Cheaper Medication Hacks - Supplements

Here’s one thing many people don’t realise: The same medication or supplement can be priced very differently, depending on where you buy it. In this economy, it helps to compare prices across pharmacies – especially for everyday items you’re likely to restock.

Take common buys like Lactokids Probiotics, Leftose Honey Lemon Lozenges, Ultravite Boswellia and Ginger Complex, or even essentials like Lumecare Hypromellose Eye Drops. For these items, prices can vary noticeably between clinics, retail chains, and online pharmacies.

Cheaper Medication Hacks - Glovida Delivery

This is where platforms like Glovida Pharmacy come in handy. Because they operate primarily online, they’re able to offer medications and supplements at up to 20% lower than typical retail prices without cutting corners on professionalism or safety. You still get advice from a licensed pharmacist, just without paying extra for a physical storefront.

For example, a sachet of 60 for Lactokids Probiotics, costs $71.10 on a popular supermarket’s website – but $56.05 on Glovida Pharmacy’s website. That’s $15.05 in savings for just one item. Plus, some platforms like Glovida Pharmacy offer free delivery to your doorstep if you purchase above $30.

2. Use CDC or SG60 vouchers at supermarkets for supplements

SG60 Vouchers

We stan CDC and SG60 vouchers vouchers. If you’ve still got some sitting unused, here’s a practical way to stretch them further: use them on supplements at supermarkets. Many Singaporeans already do their grocery runs at places like FairPrice, Cold Storage, Sheng Siong, or Giant – and most of these stock everyday essentials like multivitamins, probiotics, eye supplements, and kids’ formulas.

SG60 Supermarket Vouchers

You’re essentially offsetting your supplement spend with vouchers you’d be using anyway. It’s especially handy for household staples – think calcium tablets for parents, vitamin C for the family, or kids’ supplements – basic, non-prescription items you’ll be repurchasing regularly, not one-off impulse buys.

That said, supermarkets don’t carry prescription medications, and the range of supplements available is usually more limited as compared to pharmacies. You also won’t get professional advice at checkout, which can matter if you’re unsure what to buy. That said, this hack works best only when you know exactly what supplements are best for you.

3. Buy from JB – but factor in hidden costs

Cheaper Medication Hacks - JB Pharmacy

As Singaporeans, we admit that we do go across the Causeway regularly to makan or go shopping. But let us share another hack: buying medication and supplements in JB is another good way to save some moolah. On paper, prices can look significantly cheaper – and yes, the exchange rate helps. Especially for bigger-ticket items or long-term supplements.

But before you go all-in, it’s worth doing a quick reality check. Factor in travel time, fuel or transport costs, tolls, parking, and the very real possibility of Causeway jams, especially on weekends and during festive periods. If you’re only popping over for a couple of items, the “savings” can disappear pretty quickly.

JB Pharmacy Shopper

There’s also the added consideration of authenticity and standards. Not all sources may guarantee that medications or supplements follow Singapore’s HSA guidelines or recommended formulations, which can be a concern for some buyers.

And lastly, the question of convenience and timing. For urgent or minor ailments, heading to JB isn’t always practical – especially if you need something quickly or want the reassurance of professional advice on the spot. This is why some Singaporeans balance this by using licensed local options for everyday needs, and reserving JB runs for planned bulk buys.

4. Buy in bundles for long-term needs

Cheaper Medication Hacks - Supplement Bundles

On that note, buying one box at a time can add up pretty quickly if you’re taking certain medications or supplements regularly. A smarter move is to buy in bundles – especially for long-term needs like daily vitamins, lozenges, probiotics, eye drops, or kids’ supplements.

Cheaper Medication Hacks - Glovida Website
Screenshot from: Glovida Pharmacy

Many pharmacies – including licensed online ones like Glovida – offer multi-box discounts or better per-unit pricing when you buy in sets. For instance, a box of Leftose Lozenges costs $8.46 if you buy them individually, but you can get a 3-pack for $24.62, saving you around $0.76.

Bundling also saves you time: fewer repeat purchases, fewer delivery fees, and fewer “oh no, I ran out” moments. Just be mindful of expiry dates, especially for liquid meds or supplements, and stick to items you’re confident you’ll finish.

5. Don’t overbuy before asking a professional first

Cheaper Medication Hacks - Bulk Buying

That said, buying in bulk only makes sense if you actually need it. Stocking up on meds or supplements “just in case” can backfire – especially if the dosage isn’t right or the product doesn’t suit you. You might also end up with half-used bottles expiring in the cupboard.

In short: be kiasu, but be smart about it.

This is where speaking to a licensed professional makes all the difference. Instead of self-diagnosing via Google, you can check in with a pharmacist first to confirm what you really need, how much to take, and whether buying in bulk makes sense for your situation. While you can do this at a physical pharmacy, pharmacists may not always be available when you pop by – and making a separate trip just to ask for advice isn’t always the most time-efficient option.

This is also why more Singaporeans are turning to licensed online pharmacist consultations for everyday health questions, which brings us to our next point…

6. Use a licensed online pharmacist via WhatsApp

Cheaper Medication Hacks - Online Pharmacist

If you’re dealing with light, everyday issues like colds, coughs, eczema flare-ups, or travel meds, here’s our number 1 hack. Instead of booking a clinic appointment and sitting through long waits, why not consider talking to a licensed online pharmacist first? Pharmacies like Glovida Pharmacy provide free pharmacist consultations via WhatsApp.

Here is how it works, minus the medical jargon. For everyday OTC items like supplements, skincare, or basic meds, you can shop directly on Glovida’s website for Everyday Low Prices up to 20% lower than typical retail RRPs. You can also enjoy free standard shipping for orders above $30. Remember to create an account while you’re at it to earn points and birthday perks!

For pharmacy and prescription medication, all you have to do is WhatsApp +65 8101 5555 for a free pharmacist consultation. If needed, the pharmacists can refer you to their GP for teleconsult at just $18. Same day delivery (as fast as within 90 mins!) is also available at a fee.

Cheaper Medication Hacks - Glovida Package

We think it’s a genuinely efficient alternative for everyday health needs. Just note that the service is only available from Mondays to Saturdays, 9am to 5pm.

Hacks to get cheaper medication & supplements

At the end of the day, saving on healthcare doesn’t mean cutting corners. It means knowing your options: whether you’re using licensed online pharmacists for minor ailments, comparing prices before you buy, or being smarter about how much you stock up. Trust us, small shifts in how you shop for medication and supplements can add up to meaningful savings over time.

If you’re looking for a convenient, legit way to do just that, it’s worth checking out Glovida. They’ve got free pharmacist consultations via WhatsApp, everyday low prices, and same-day delivery, making them a practical option for Singaporeans who want to stretch their dollar without compromising on safety.

Supermarket hacks

Grocery runs are a part of everyone’s schedule, whether you’re living solo or with the fam. And we’re not one to reject a good bargain, so we’ve consulted super shoppers – AKA our mums – and consolidated 7 best supermarket hacks in Singapore to save time and money.

From getting the best discounts to efficiently spending your time at the supermarket, these hacks will come in handy the next time you’re grocery shopping. Keep reading to find out more:

1. Compare price per weight to save money

supermarket hacks

There’s no shame in taking a lil’ more time when deciding which price combination is the best to go for. Instead of grabbing the product whose price tag looks the most attractive, you’ll want to whip out your phone calculator to check the price per weight instead.

For example, 2 small jars of sauce that are $4 each can actually add up to cost less than 1 big jar that goes for $7, if you get more product in the 2 small jars combined. Do some quick maths and divide the costs so you can be sure that you’re getting the best deal at the supermarket.

2. Shop during midweek evenings

supermarket hacks - best time to shop

Many of us have experienced the dreaded peak hours at supermarkets, with long checkout queues snaking along the walkways. To avoid this, you’ll want to shop smart and pick the right time to drop by the market.

Local supermarket staff recommend heading over during midweek. Many will be busy with work, and reserve their supermarket runs for the weekend instead. Plus, Tuesdays are when some supermarkets like Giant and Prime Supermarket offer the lowest senior citizen discount—so you’re unlikely to catch the golden age crowd then.

3. Know which queues move faster

supermarket hacks - shortest queue
Image for illustrative purposes only.

Some days we like to dilly dally in the shops, while other days we need to make a quick run. Those in a hurry will want to shave time off when paying the bill, and it’s best to know which queues are the quickest.

If you only have a couple of items in the basket, opt for self-checkout. Contrary to popular belief, this system isn’t slower because shoppers have to DIY – once you’ve familiarised yourself with the process, you can be done within a few minutes.

Those heading to the cashier can stick to queues with fewer customers – regardless of their basket size. This is because with each shopper comes the need for greetings and chit chat, and time for these will add up. Or, consider getting in a line with younger shoppers, as you’ll find that they are typically quicker with cashless payment methods.

4. Check local drugstores for discounts on essentials

supermarket hacks - guardian deals

While you can find almost anything and everything at our supermarkets, you’ll want to pop into drugstores such as Guardian for more affordable daily essentials in Singapore.

They often have ongoing promotions for items such as shampoos, conditioners, and makeup removers, which you can snag at a fraction of the price. These shops are also easily accessible at your nearby heartland malls, so you won’t have to travel far and wide for a good discount.

5. Opt for supermarket house brands

supermarket hacks - house brands

We’re often greeted with a plethora of brands we can select from, including the premium ones imported from overseas. But instead of making a beeline to those brands, another top tip would be to check out the affordable house brands from big supermarket chains including Meadows by Giant

You can find anything from savoury snacks to household cleaning products from these labels. They often come with a wallet-friendly price tag, and are just as good as those that’ve been shipped in.

6. Get whole fruits & vegetables

supermarket hacks - whole fruits and vegetables

We know, we know – it’s great when all your fruits and vegetables have been pre-cut, and all you need to do is a quick rinse and they’ll be good to go. But convenience comes at a cost, and these are usually more expensive than getting whole produce.

Save a couple of bucks and get uncut fruits and vegetables such as garlic, onion, and watermelon instead. And hey, you’ll be able to hone your cutting skills too.

7. Order groceries online to avoid getting distracted

supermarket hacks - order groceries online

Many of us have experienced the supermarket phenomenon – where we enter the store only needing to get toilet paper, but end up leaving with bags of impulse buys. To prevent this situation from happening, order your groceries online rather than heading down to a physical shop.

Supermarkets such as Cold Storage have their own designated app which you can conveniently order from. Prep a grocery list prior and add them to your e-cart. You’ll want to search for the items directly, instead of scrolling through the various tabs on the website. This way, you won’t have to face the dilemma of “do I need this, or do I want this?”.

Slay your supermarket game with these hacks

Hotpot tips & hacks for CNY reunion dinners

Chinese New Year reunion dinners are a good time for friends and families to catch up over sumptuous food. Though, let’s be real, the process can require a ton of prep. Enter hotpots, a crowd-pleasing meal that is convenient to execute. Not to mention, if you think outside the box, you can even elevate your hotpot dinners to a restaurant-level experience.

Here are tips & hacks for a homemade hotpot dinner to impress your friends and family and make your upcoming CNY reunions a roaring success.

What do I need to make hotpot at home?

First-time hotpot hosts, use this checklist for all the things you need for hotpot. This would be in addition to your usual dinner table setting, and does not include the food you’ll need.

  • Hotpot: Dual-sided hotpots mean double the types of soup you can serve during the meal. It’s great for separating spicy and non-spicy bases or even vegetarian and non-vegetarian options.
  • Induction cooker: Unless your hotpot is plug-and-play, you’ll need an induction cooker to keep your soup boiling to cook your ingredients.
  • Cutlery & utensils: Get separate chopsticks or tongs to handle raw meat and seafood to prevent cross-contamination. You’ll also want individual wire strainers so guests can pick food out of the pot, and a soup ladle for serving.
  • Sauce bowls: One of the best parts of hotpot is creating your own sauce. Have enough sauce bowls around so everyone can get creative and personal with their dipping sauce for a more enjoyable meal.

You can find everything listed here on TheSmartLocal Amazon Storefront. Bookmark it and you’ll be privy to all our product recommendations. Sign up for a Prime Membership and you’ll even be able to enjoy free next-day delivery.

What are the cooking times for common hotpot ingredients?

No one wants to bite into a raw fishball. Not to mention, raw food can cause a stomachache, or worse, food poisoning. Here’s a breakdown of hotpot ingredient cooking times:

Category Ingredient Cooking Time
Proteins Thinly sliced beef/pork 15-30 seconds
Chicken slices 2-3 minutes
Fish fillets 1-2 minutes (depends on thickness)
Prawns (with shells) 2-3 minutes or until they turn pink
Scallops 2-3 minutes
Meatballs/Fishballs (frozen or fresh) 4-5 minutes or until they float
Seafood Squid rings 1-2 minutes
Clams/mussels 3-5 minutes or until shells open
Imitation crabmeat 3-5 minutes
Vegetables Leafy greens (e.g., spinach, bok choy) 30 seconds to 1 minute
Cabbage (napa, regular) 2-3 minutes
Mushrooms (enoki, shiitake) 2-4 minutes, depending on size
Corn on the cob 8-10 minutes
Tofu Soft tofu 1-2 minutes
Firm tofu 2-3 minutes
Fried tofu puffs 2-3 minutes
Carbs Fresh noodles 1-2 minutes
Rice cakes 4-6 minutes
Vermicelli/glass noodles 2-3 minutes
Eggs Quail eggs 4-5 minutes (boil in shell first or crack directly into soup)
Raw chicken egg Crack and swirl in the soup; cooks in 1-2 minutes

Tips:

  • Always check doneness if you’re unsure – seafood should be opaque, and meat should lose any pink.
  • Use a mesh skimmer to retrieve items quickly so they don’t overcook.

1. Recreate your fave hotpot with ready-made soup bases

hotpot tips - soup base

Making a rich hotpot broth requires way more time to prepare than it takes to slurp it down. Those who’ve tried cheffing it up in the kitchen will know that it can take several hours just to infuse a broth with ample flavour.

If you’re pressed for time, save the hassle by ordering pre-made hotpot staples. You can find classics such as Haidilao Mushroom Flavour Hot Pot Seasoning ($6.13) and Tomato Flavour Hot Pot Seasoning ($4.51) amongst others. Simply mix in some hot water to turn them into flavourful soups.

Pro tip: Pre-made mixtures like this also double up as seasoning for food so you can add it to any vegetables or meats you stir-fry.

2. Level up your spread with atas CNY ingredients

Ingredients such as abalone, fish maw, and prawns are basically representative of CNY, which is why you should indulge in them during your reunion dinners. Simply having these items available for guests on the day itself instantly elevates your hotpot meal to a more atas level.

Fortunately, Amazon Fresh has a large variety of these CNY specialities you can order to give your reunion dinner a festive uplift. With items ranging from Fortune Braised Abalone ($26.84, U.P. $39.19) to New Moon Bird’s Nest with White Fungus Rock Sugar ($22.80, U.P. $40.55), we’re spoilt for choice this coming Lunar New Year.

3. Add KBBQ into the mix with a 2-in-1 hotpot grill

If you’re keen to bring a barbecue experience to the comfort of your home during your hotpot dinner, perhaps getting a 2-in-1 hotpot grill is the way to go.

With the rising popularity of K-BBQ, yakiniku, and mookata amongst other experiences, getting a multitasking product like the Cornell 2-in-1 Steamboat BBQ ($88) provides us with the best of all worlds.

4. Let guests DIY their own condiments & sauces

Pairing your ingredients with condiments and sauces is iconic of the hotpot experience. So, if you want to up your reunion dinner game, you can provide fancy-looking condiment trays for each guest to DIY their own sauces.

Not only is it more hygienic than having everyone share sauce bowls, it also recreates the experience of dining out in a restaurant like Haidilao.

5. Create your own next-level CNY snack platters for guests

hotpot tips - snack platter

As we’ve seen from Haidilao, it’s important to prevent our guests from getting hangry. We can do this by serving them some snacks while they’re waiting for dinner to start. Unleash your creativity by DIY-ing snack platters with novelty items like Lindt Lindor Milk Chocolates and Oreo Red Velvet Sandwich Cookies, amongst other things.

If your guests prefer something a bit more filling, then whip out the air fryer to cook some of your processed ingredients, like cheese tofu and fishballs. That way, there’s something to snack on while you wait for your first batch of ingredients to cook.

6. Cook ingredients in this order: starchy vegetables, seafood, leafy vegetables, meats

Yes, there is a right order for cooking food in your hotpot. It’s tempting to want to start with the good stuff first, like meat, but you’ll be left with a scummy broth that’ll leave your fish fillets and prawns tasting like beef or pork.

The trick is to start with your starchy vegetables first, such as corn, carrots, and even potatoes. Not only do these take the longest to cook to become fork-tender, you can use this base to make your own hotpot broth. These will make your soup have a sweeter taste, which will complement seafood items.

The next mellow ingredients on the list are your seafood items that won’t affect the taste of your broth much. In fact, the broth gets even sweeter with the addition of seafood. You’ll want to save your leafy vegetables and meat for last because those cook the fastest and meats tend to create scum on the top of your soup. Use a soup skimmer ($25.02) to keep your broth clear throughout dinner.

7. Invest in a countertop dishwasher

The end of a hotpot meal can be a hassle to clean up with all the tiny sauce bowls, plates, and cutlery you have to collect and wash individually. These days, there are countertop dishwashers that don’t require any installation that’ll get the job done with minimal fuss.

Most also have an eco option that uses less water than what you would normally use washing by hand, so it’ll save you money in the long run.

8. Save your hotpot broth to make congee

Probably the biggest thing to deal with after hotpot is what to do with all your leftover broth. It seems like such a waste to throw it out after it’s been boiling all your proteins. But strain it and you’ll have a base to make flavourful congee. Just add rice and stir as the whole pot comes to a boil. You can even throw in any leftovers to add liao to your congee.

Just be sure not serve this congee on the first day of the new year. It’s a classic CNY taboo, as the meal is associated with poverty and poor health – not the most prosperous meal to have on such a festive occasion!

9. Keep the room at a cool temperature to avoid hotpot fumes

hotpot tips - aircon temperature

A downside of having a hotpot meal is that the fumes will make the room temperature much warmer. Combine this with a spicy soup or sauce and you’re basically guaranteed a reunion dinner sweat fest.

To avoid this, ensure everyone is kept cool during dinner by switching on your AC or using fans like the Xiaomi Mi Smart Standing Fan 2 ($95, U.P. $109).

At the same time, improve the air quality at home by bringing out an air purifier to clear out the BBQ smoke. At least you won’t have to smell like grease and oil at the end of the night.

Tip: Those who need new appliances at the last minute can sign up as a Prime member on Amazon.sg to get free one-day delivery on eligible items.

Bonus: Turn your Mahjong table into a spare dining table

Mahjong tables aren’t just props for you to roll some dice and place some tiles. They can also double up as makeshift dining tables too.

With a smorgasbord of hotpot ingredients to choose from, most of our dining tables will undoubtedly be filled with tonnes of food, plates and utensils. To declutter the area where you’ll eat, just use a mahjong table to hold extra ingredients and drinks.
